Well, IMO, the first thing I would do is take the car to a mechanic while you are test driving it and have them give a really good look over. If you can't do that, at least give it a look yourself and check for any obvious damage. Watch how the tranny shifts and how the clutch feels. If everything seems cool then you should be good. Make sure you don't let them screw you on the price. I got my 01 z28 a4 with 68k miles and it was $8700. If they can't give you a reasonable deal, keep looking. The first mod I might do would be what I have done to mine at the moment. I bought an 85mm ftp lid and an 85mm slp maf, some 1 3/4lts and the 3" ory and a catback. Maybe an underdrive pulley, a spec clutch, maybe some sticky tires. That's where I would start anyway. Good luck man, hope you find what you are looking for. Oh yeah, BTW, damn good choice on the trading. You won't be dissapointed.

its gonna be a dd but i do go to the track and it will see plently of races on the street. i was thinking of going full bolt ons, then do the rear while im getting used to the power difference, then heads/cams, and maybe eventually some spray. the stang was fun but powerwise 2vs are worthless with out fi. and even with it an ls1 is capable of walking it with the right stuff.

yes there are plenty of ls1's that have walked plenty of gt's but im glad to see you changed over. only 1 cam in ls1's , yes full bolt on's longtube's,off road Y pipe, good cat back, rearend is deff somthing to look into esp if you have a six speed.but cam heads intake with 100 shot, really stout car there.

nice looking gt.

when looking around, generally the fewer the mods the better. you don't want something that's been beat on.
listen for rear end noise, whine of a fuel pump going out.

also, there are some minor differences through the years:
i'd avoid 98's due to inferior oil return (little machined holes for rear oil passage vs actual open passages in newer blocks), weaker rod bolts and overly sensitive knock sensors.
you can identify a 98 ls1 by looking at the valve covers and coil packs - newer ls1's will have a single black metal bracket mounted on each valve cover that has the coil packs mounted to the bracket. the 98 ls1's have each coil pack mounted to the valve cover separately and 98 valve covers are bolted to the head with bolts around the perimeter.

as far as 99-02, since you're going with bolt-ons, differences are minimal. if i was looking for one, i'd consider that the 99-00 stock cams are slightly more aggressive
98-00
198.86/209.25 .498/.497 119.45

01-02
196.37/208.72 .464/.479 115.9

if you do go with a 99-00, definitely get the ls6 intake off a newer ls1, ditch the egr and slap some headers on it. you'll be surprised at how much power you'll gain.

dude 150 shot, lid, full exhaust, with drag radial is all you need, it will fly!! then save up for a nice rear!!

but if your smart unlike me you will go rear, tranny, suspenison, then motor, i just did it the other way around!
