Default Good Price?

Hey guys,

In the market for an F-body right now. Found one at a local dealership that caught my eye. Its a 1998 trans am WS6. Red in color. A4 trans. From what I can see in the pictures it looks extremely clean. Has only 31k miles. Looks completely stock, maybe a catback. They are asking $12,995. Im going to try to talk them down a little bit. But if I end up paying about 13k after taxes I think thats a fair price. What do you guys think? Thanks for the opinions. Cant wait to be a part of the community.

It's a ten year old car. I would never consider paying that for a 98 WS6. You can find a 98 T/A or newer for about $5,500 or less. To me that hood isn't worth paying 2x for.

Max dealer retail per Edmunds is about $8,500 for that car. Depending on condition it could be as low as $4,500. Read up on what the cars go for before you spend that sort of cash.

There's a recession going on...it's a buyers market...not a sellers...

Of course in the end it's all about what you want.

I'll answer you and welcome to the board.

I sell cars I have several attitudes about price and value.

You need to go see the car and ask for a car fax.

The asking price is that. Naturally there is mark-up in the vehicle. If the car is junk you really don't want it. If the title is clean etc. look the car over.

I assume you've been on the internet. I went to Cars. com there are others. I went out 500 miles, set no money cap value, and found 500 units. In my eyes you want the most value for your money. Money is a totally different subject. Are you paying cash? No trade? Do you have credit?

Good luck you'll find one you're happy with. My opinion, to hell with what others think. Unless they are assisting you with payments. Everyone has an opinion but it's your life..

Jakes Dad

p.s. the value of cars differs in different parts of the country.

Thanks for the comments guys,

I live in Northwest Indiana, not souther California. Finding a solid car around here is a needle in a haystack. From the research I have done, this is a fair price. The car looks extremely clean, and the man I spoke to on the phone swears that it is a 9 out of 10. "As clean as any he has seen." I am going to look at the car Monday, so I will let you know what happens. Thanks again guys.

I think that I'm in Indiana and have a lower mile Z28 6 speed I'll sell you for around that and I can make it pretty much stock again for you if you want.

Welcome,
I agree, you need to go look/drive it first, and get a car fax history report. Where at in NW Indiana?

personally I Cant say I agree with this at all..not even close. The WS6's in good condition, low miles are still holding value. I've seen lt1 ws6's in great condition that are still 8,9000 cars and selling. From the pictures you posted, the car looks quite nice. the miles are low enough that if it runs and drives good, has clean history, and you can talk him down to even about 11,500..I say not a bad buy. Thats just my opinion

Exactly my thoughts. Like he said, around here I have seen ws6 lt1 cars go for around 10k. WS6's hold their value amazingly well. Compared to a z28, trans am, formula, and even SS they are very expensive. Im going to see if I can talk him down to somewhere around 11.5-12k. If I can do this I will feel good about the purchase.

No freaking way dude! You can pic one up on this site, nicely modded, and as a plus you will know the vehicles history, for way less than that. Ive seen a few TA's for less than 10 and in similar condition.
Search and ye shall find, but if I were you I would keep searching.

No, this will not be my only car. I have a beater '88 silverado I can drive when it is nasty out. I, however, and buying this car to drive.

I have around 16k total to spend. If i get this car, I figure I will have around 13k in it after sales tax and getting it plated and what not. That leaves me 3k to play with. I intend on getting kooks stainless headers, but dont know where to go from there. Any suggestions.

Also, being so close to you we should cruise together when springs gets here. Interested?

The market is flooded right now and cars are not selling new or used. I do think that is very very top dollor for that car . If they come down and they will if you hold your ground. Start at 10,500 see what they say. If they dont like it walk away and Im sure they will chase you down and give you a better counter offer. I sent you a PM about my car did you get it. My 01 WS6 has only 28,000 miles and around 10k in performance upgrades I will wait and try to sell mine in the spring, now is a bad time to sell.Good Luck and let us know what they say.
