Default a non-ls1 daily-driver question

i have a 1991 toyota corolla, automatic with 144k miles. just yesterday my car started for the first time in 3.5 years slipping gears, mostly 1st and 2nd. driving it manually seems to correct the problem, but it's an auto, i don't want to do that! i checked the fluid, it's fine, but what else could it be? thanks.
