Default shift light....

dunno what forum to post this in but my factory tach is off or just too slow and causing me to hit rev limiter sometimes when im going down the track so im wondering if i were to buy a shift light would it go off according to the RPMs my tach reads or will it go off at the ACTUAL RPMs my motor is at? i do not want to buy a big ugly aftermarket tach just want to know the best point to shift before limiter and i figure a big bright light will work best, thats if it works the way i want it to...
