A custom carbon fiber hood would be the lightest but most expensive. A Harwood fiberglass would be a more cost effective solution.

I think a stock 93-97 camaro hood weighs around 42-45#.

I just purchased a bolt on VFN 3"SS hood, and it weighs 25#. I think the pin on one weighs alot less like 13-14#.

I always wondered why the hood is made of metal when just about the rest of the car isn't? Isn't plastic cheaper to manu than metal?

I bought a carbon fiber one off eBay and it weighed 14lbs. It is the ss style with reverse louvers over the headers, works great and I get tons of compliments every time I go out. I paid a little under 800 shipped. I am selling it though because I am having a custom one off hood made for inducing cooling and downforce, the car is being changed into a hopeful 200mph club car. I have pics of it on the car if you just want to see it.

Safety reasons.. in a front end collision, a stock hood (made of metal/steel) will bend/fold up. A fiberglass/carbon fiber one on the other hand would shatter and break through the windshield leaving you for a potential decapitated victim. You sacrafice safety for performance.
