Midwestern Members - Info on winter rims/tires

I've been searching for a winter set of rims, and figured I would just find a set of cheap steel rims... only problem is it seems like they are non-existent. Anyone know where I might have some luck finding steel rims, or are they not much cheaper than a cheap set of alloys? Also if anyone is getting rid of a set of winter rims/tires I would probably be interested.

I'm near South Bend, IN and have already looked at Tire Rack and Discount Tire. Should I just pop into a smaller tire/rim place and see what they have?

Also, I have heard that Blizzaks are the bomb when it comes to winter rubber, but what else is good or you have had good experiences with?

Don't tell me to get a beater, the only time I drive the car is on the weekends for trips to Purdue. (most of the time the roads are clear anyway) My car is reliable and I would trust it making the trip on a good set of rubber rather than a 190,000 mile $900 piece of junk that might leave me sitting.

I would call up a junkyard and see if they have some steelies, which I'm sure they will have some. Obviously it would look like complete ass but if you dont wanna spend alot of money and you just need something for the winter, it's a good option.

Ultimatley, I would go with the $900 peice of junk though. No salt, save miles, and the winter months seem to tear up the interior alot more.

i had a 4 camaro steel rims with 4 blizzaks winter tires up for sale since last year. Not one bit on them so this year i posted them up really early in this section, midwest FS section and in the LSx FS section and they were SOLD in 1 day :D

I have a set of old cragers 5 spoke I used on my TA for the winter. No tires just rims will fit a 98 and up TA. They are sitting in my garage Ill let them got for $100. You will have to pick them up I wont ship them.

Blizzaks are AWSOME, used them last winter, and they do help.

I like my blizzaks for the winter. Just find some stocker rims for 50 bucks and get the winter tires.

You can go with the V6 Camaro steel wheels (ones that came on the base plastic wheel cover cars), they are 16x7.5" sized and fit our brakes no problem.

Or you could go with some stock 16x8" base aluminum wheels, but I'd stay away from the chrome for a winter wheel (chrome will eventually peel from salt exposure, and if it peels near the valve stem it'll leak air, this I know from experiance).

Personally, I just picked up some aftermarket 16x7.5" wheels from tirerack (cheapest ones they sell) with 225/55/16 Blizzak WS60s. Whole deal cost me $8xx with shipping and free mounting & balancing. Tires cost more than the wheels. I could've saved a bit going with used stock alloy wheels; but then I'd have to find a set, possibily pay for shipping PLUS mounting & balancing, and pay sales tax if I bought new tires locally. So doing it this way was much easier and probably cost similar in the end, plus the 7.5" wheel width will be better for snow traction than 8".

Of course, the best thing would've been to get off my ass and buy Jonas's wheel/tire setup, but I wasn't sure I'd need 'em back then. :bang:

Oh yeah, about the $900 beater idea, I used to be BIG on pushing that one. But I got sick of driving shit cars, so these days I prefer to have a nice 'beater', which is what my '02 Z is for. :D The '98 Z and '71 Nova are my nice weather toys; so no matter what I'm driving a V8 RWD car now....and loving it. :cool:

I had Blizzaks , they seemed to work good. I also had Dunlop Wintersport's , 245/45/17's (mustang) and they were VERY good.

I've also heard good things about those wintersports.

Any comments on Dunlop Graspic DS-2's? Tirerack has 'em relatively cheap. I'm keeping my z28 another season or two and don't want to invest too much in tires.

Last year pretty much killed my blizzaks from 2001 (bought used with a season already on them).

man i have some stockers but im in southern indiana... id sell you them for cheap but im not really sure on the rubber condition... they came off the car as soon as i got it

looking for stock wheels for the winter, do you still have those?
