Default Anyone ever done the VATS resistor like this? Will it work ok?

Well my friend an I had an issue. His car is over 2 hours away stranded in a parking lot and it wont start. I had him try cleaning the contacts in the lock cylender with no luck. So I had him test the resistance of the key then I went to the junk yard and clipped the pig tail off the column side of the VATS connector. Then I soldered in two 1.5ohm resistors to equal the 3ohm resistance of the key. Here is a picture of what I did.

My only worry as of right now is the resistance is 2.94ohms. The resistance of the key is 3.01ohms. Thanks for the help.

The concept is good but your resistance is out by a factor of 1000. Your 3.01 ohm resistance should actually be 3.01K ohms (3010 ohms). The system allows about 5% variance so you can use resistors totalling from 2890 ohms thru 3150 ohms.

Thanks for clearing that up for me. I did have 1.5k ohms resistors. I thought I did but I got worried and started second guessing myself lol. I went out this morning after you said that and checked. Everything would have been perfect but the guy at the dealership that he took the key to some how screwed up reading the resistance and told him it was 3.01k but it ended up being .68k..... So I cut the resistors out of my wire I made and just stuck the ends of the pig tail to the resistor in his spare key and fired it up

So I guess if your ever screwed and stranded use your spare key if you have one

I've said this before - VATS can't be tuned out. The VATS system in our cars is contained in the BCM. It does two things if it detects the wrong key - it turns off the fuel enable signal to the PCM and it turns off the ground to the starter relay. Sure, you can tune the PCM to ignore the missing fuel enable signal but the BCM itself is not programable so you can't enable the starter relay.

I jumped from the buss before VATS to the starter solenoid wire. On a 91 RS.
