Meh, for a inexperienced individual, yea, for those that have done it...it is just the fact of doing it that bothers me.

Its not bad if you have done it before. Its a matter or unbolting motor mounts lowering K member, attaching the engine to a engine hoist and jacking up the engine. Then drain oil, undo the low oil level sensor, starter, unbolt pan There is the oil pump. Atleast for my 6 speed thats how i have to do it.

ha, couldnt agree more!

disconnect battery. pull the two big motor mount bolts out. jack the engine up as high as it will go. take off starter, un bolt the oil pan. and pull it out. may have to turn the crank to move the weights in order to actually pull the pan. not real hard. just a PITA

A4 or m6? not sure if you can do it with a m6 without having to pull the trans out. A4 no problem since its more round shape then a m6

It wont come out without either lowering the K member or disconnecting the trans in a 6-speed I tried trust me.

That sounds like a major pain!

BTW car is an auto.

The reason I'm asking is because my oil pressure seems to be low. I'm not sure if it's the sending unit though...(pic)

i would replace the sending unit before i tore off the oil pan. little easier. and if it doesnt fix it then change the oil pump. luckily you have a a4. you WONT have to drop the k-member.

put a mechanical gauge on it 1st. But low oil pressure can come from excessive bearing clearances. I would bet a oil pump is not the cause of that if it is fact an accurate reading. If it does that only on hard stops and hard acceleration, then there is a good chance the pickup fell off.

dont go pulling the pan if it might be the sending unit! Ive done it before and somehow i managed to do it with an m6 without touching the K member. Just jacked up the motor as far as it would go. How hot is the car when the pressure is like that?

Looks like its just below 185 degrees when the oil pressure is that low. IDK how the hell you managed to get that pan off with out lowering the K member. I had mine jacked up so high it was on the cowl and starting to bend it and i still couldn't get it to clear the trans.

Didn't have to drop the k on my car, A4, also put a canton pan back in. It was a tight fit and alot of swearing, but it went in. Dropping the k means realignment.

Oil pumps are extremely reliable, the chance it would cause low oil pressure is very low. Verify with a mechanical gauge and if indeed low it would be a much better assumption to belive it is bearings.

How hot is the car when the pressure is like that?
After driving on the expressway for about 40 minutes 65-70MPH

it would be a much better assumption to belive it is bearings.
So does that mean the motor's shot?

Forgot to ask....

Is it likely this condition is nothing more than an oil pressure sending unit on it's way out?

I have not seen a sender fail by reading a little low, just by being erradic. Best bet though is to verify with a mechanical gauge before doing anything else. Can get a basic one at almost any parts store for $15-20, might get the copper tube kit for the extra $10 too. I would not plumb it into the car. Do a temporary install attaching it somewhere between the hood and windsheild and go for a drive.

Where do you plumb it into besides the sending unit?

Courtesy of shbox. This is where you want to go to. I checked my electric gauge with a mechanical and mine was dead on.
