Double-roller Timing chain vs. Single-roller
Just checking to see if the double will cause the engine to produce a little less horsepower or if they both will be the same.

Re: Double-roller Timing chain vs. Single-roller
You can look at the C-5R engine buildup in Hot Rod mag. They are using a single Rollmaster. The 24 Hr at LeMans Corvettes were using a single.
The double ... No doubt about it, it should be strong. Stronger than the single? Who knows.
HP loss with a double. Like these guys just said ... negligable
What should you buy ... Probably makes no difference.
What did I buy ... A single
Oh Well.
The double allows you to advance or retard the cam. The single is non-adjustable. Most people just put the cam in dot to dot anyway, so, it really makes no difference which one you get.
My 2 cents ..

Re: Double-roller Timing chain vs. Single-roller
You can look at it this way:
With 2 chains, will there be less stress on either one of them vs a single?
With 2 chains, is there double the chance of one of them breaking?
How about if we had 5 chains all spinning at the same time? Would that be even better or worse.
It's up to you....

Re: Double-roller Timing chain vs. Single-roller
JRP and Tin Indian, that makes alot of sense. I'll probably just go with the single roller.
Does anyone know the best/cheapest place to get one from. Thanks

Re: Double-roller Timing chain vs. Single-roller
there was a huge discussion about this about 2 weeks ago....
It got real ugly....
I went double
somewhere in history a single chain broke...
so somebody built a double....
and it broke....
so they made a gear drive......
and it got screwed up...
so they made it out of better materials...
get the drift???
how much power you wanna make???
under 350??? spin to 5500/6000???
stay single....it'll be ok.
more power than 350??? spin to 6500/7000???(like me)
go double....better safe than sorry.....
If you break a single...your motor is way toast!!!
the valves loose sync with the pistons...you will probably bend most of the pushrods and valves...and might shatter a piston or two...and it will sieze up immediately....If your High in the rpms??? watch out...a whole lot more connected to it will break from the sudden stop.....
If you go double...and 1 breaks....the other has a chance to hold...If it holds you can roll it/tow it to fix it...with minimal work...and minimal $$$...and minimal time.
Chances are the first one whipping around will kill the second one...but you still have a chance of survival...and usually a second or two to kill the motor and SURVIVE befor the 2nd one breaks.(you can always coast to the finish).
Like I said....
How much risk do you like????
If somebody made a gear drive for our engine...I'd probably go with it...shame their usually so dam noisy and would trigger our knock sensor so bad.

Re: Double-roller Timing chain vs. Single-roller
I found it cheap insurance against damage, poor valve timing, and possible loss of HP (not to mention that the SDPC double roller is less than what most of the companies want for their single chain).
As soundengineer said, its too bad nobody makes a gear drive system for the LS1 or I WOULD have it on my car (though I don't care about the noise, just the positive timing).

Re: Double-roller Timing chain vs. Single-roller
yup...the positive tinming thing too.....what I read said that the reason they didnt make them for the ls1 was 2fold....
too noisy...creates false knock
too small of a space....not enough room to put a gear drive in there...and no where to mount it.

Re: Double-roller Timing chain vs. Single-roller
The double roller is made by Rollermaster in Australia. This makes them cheaper to produce than the single "Made in the USA" single roller chain. Then add in that SDPC can order/keep a large number in stock and thus sell for less. SLP also sells the "Rollermaster" chain but puts their name on it so it costs more.

Re: Double-roller Timing chain vs. Single-roller
the reason i went with the double, i looked at the price difference between the double and single and it was worth the 10 bucks . these are TSP prices btw, excellent vendor i must say.

Re: Double-roller Timing chain vs. Single-roller
Well, the JWIS is manufactured in Germany by Iwis Ketten. In fact, the JWIS chain is found in the Rollmaster Timing Set. Rollmaster does not manufacture chain.
Not sure about the Comp Cams chain.
BTW, your factory stock chain isn't even manufactured in the US. It's made by Renold in England.
