Are you able to put a cam in a LS1 without taking the motor out?

Of course you can! You'll have to remove the front drive accessories, as well as the radiator shroud/airbox. Then remove the radiator, move the AC condenser out of the way (no need to disconnect it!), and you've got enough room. Pulling the engine for a cam swap is a massive waste of time/effort IMO!

Search it on LS1howto. The pulley can be the biggest PIA of the whole swap

NO kidding, my slp pulley gave me hell!
