Default Water Pump Timing Cover Seal and Shaft O-Rings... Why?

Ok I have been tracing a oil leak down as most of us always seem to be doing lol.

I am sure its coming from the water pump shaft but I bought all the seals just to be safe. I doubt I am going to pull the timing cover though I just don't want to deal with that today.

However when I bought the parts from GM (Yes I went to the dealer, I am sick of tearing things apart here) they showed 2 O-Ring seals on the water pump shaft that goes between the water pump and the gear drive on the timing cover.... I never put any o-rings on to being with and got to thinking...
are they required? What are they for???

I did not think that oil passed through there but I could be wrong.

What is the purpose of these seals why are they there? Any idea's or reasons?

I am going to put them on when i take a look and see how but I am just curious as to why they are there.

Seems to me that they are just there to keep moisture out of the joints.

They keep dirt out of the shaft and dampen any vibration, that is all.

The WP drive seal is a PITA, look at the new one there are actually two seals one pointing in, one out, the inner one is commonly folded out during assembly and that is why it ends up leaking, it needs to stay turned in. Should also be installed DRY, no oil.

It is one piece with two sealing lips built into it.

Well I have a few parts here and I am now confused... I think I forgot to tell him it was a 96 Motor so he gave me the wrong Opti Seal... Damit.

Anyway could I get some help with part numbers, mainly the one I am going to need and which is which here:

GM 10128317 (I think this is the 93-94 Opti Seal?)
GM 10217886 (I believe this one to be the Water Pump Shaft Seal?)
GM 10128316 (Main shaft seal right? Expensive seal lol)
GM 10128293 (I think its safe to say this is the timing cover... just maybe lol)

Ok on another note... HOW the HELL do you get the seal for the water pump out? Don't tell me I have to remove the timing cover... I really do not want too.

Oh and the Opti Seal I need for my 96 Motor... what is the part number lol. I have to get an Autozone one as GM is closed today for inventory.... (Well my dealership)
