Default determining what gear....

so I know theres got to be a way to tell what gears in a rear end with the rear end being out of the car. My question is how? the reason I ask is I blew out my 10 bolt in my car and i'm purchasing one from someone who says the rear end has a 3.42 which would be awesome if true I just want to make sure i'm getting a 3.42 and not just another 2.73 any info would be greatly appreciated.

Default re

with the car off the ground in the rear and the tranny in neutral spin the tire one revolution. count the times the drive shaft spins. ie a 3.73 gear the drive shaft will spin between 3.5 and 4 times. I would use some tape to help you count the revoutions.
