Default LS6?

I heard that some 2000 and 2001 f- bodies had LS6 blocks in them instead of LS1's Is that true? If so what difference is it?

I believe you are referring to the fact that 2001 and 2002 f-bodies have the ls6 intake on them already. That is the only difference I have heard about them. Others have said that they also have the ls6 oil pump but I can not vouch for that though. There exist other differences like PCM prgramming which all told means stock they have more power than mine stock .

Default Re: LS6?

"A recent interview with John Douro, GM's Gen. III/Iv block staff engineer, turned up some interesting facts about the Y- and F-Body's wonder mill.
When the LS1 debuted in 1997,Gm called on the Montepet factory in Canada to provide engine blocks for the corvette. But from 1998 through 2002,GM used two suppliers for LS1 engine blocks: Montupet and Nemak in mexico. Montupet utilizes a gravity-feed process that uses a combination of metallic dies and sand cores for the LS1. Nemak uses a low-pressure precision fan process, which is more of a high-performance process.
Then in 2000-2001, the impending introduction of the corvette Zo6 meant that GM would have to re-engineer the LS1 block for more strength. Sice Nemak's material properties were 10 percent higher, GM went with Nemak as their supplier when the time came to create the LS6 but still had Montupet provide LS1 blocks. The new Nemak LS6 casting was much stronger, but a big difference between the LS6 and the LS1 was that the LS1 had a 28.5 mm(over 1 inch) ventiliation hole drilled through the center of all 5 bulkheads, close to the crank, for bay-to-bay breathing. Powertrain deemed this insufficient for the LS6, so a new design with a much larger, cast-in ventiliation hole (or "cast-in honeover travel vent window" in GM-speak) through the 2,3, and 4 bulkheads toward the bottom of the cylinder bores on both sides was created. This was done on the 2,3 and 4 bulkheads since they were the ones that had an affect on bay-to-bay breathing.
The results were impressive--this change created 87 percent more ventilation on the LS6 block, with the improvment paying dividends with less pumping loss at high rpm. No official horsepower increases were reported, but Powertrain insiders were optimistic about the suggestion of a few horses here and there. Regardless of the fact, the durability of the LS6 block had been increased dramatically over the LS1.
And now, for the good news: according to GM, the sheer volume in which this block was produced meant that they were able to let some go over to the camaro and firebird program. It is said that 10-15percent of all 2001 F-cars and around 25 percent of all 2002 F-cars are running around with LS6 blocks!!
To confirm if your 2001-2002 F-body has an LS6 block grab a MIRROR and a FLASHLIGHT. Open the hood and head over to the driver's side to try and see the back of the left-hand deck, above the transmission flange. A cast-in 12561168 denotes the LS6 block.
However, if you aren't able to see the number, you may be able to tell by the block's luster--the Montupet plant cast a shiner block. And starting in 2003, all LS1/LS6 blocks will be of the newer Nemak configuration."

OK Ed, here's the fun part, did the LS1 from mexico, and the LS1 from the Montupet have the same casting number ? if so, how do you tell the differance ? Also, what is the differance in power/parts between the 97/98 LS1 in the vette, compared to the possible Nemak block in the F-body ? I have a 98 T/A, and would like to know which block I have, I found this in a search, hope you can help, or anyone ??

the ls6 also has holes in the bukheads of webing of the block for reduction of pumping loss.

I read that the casting number is 12551168.
