Default I think my clutch disc exploded *PICS ADDED*

a couple nights ago i was racing my friend's 05 Mustang and in the rare event that i actually miss a gear i missed 3rd on the 2-3 shift, however i didn't go back into first

anyway after i missed the gear i heard the sound from hell as i saw the tach jump above 6k and after that i felt vibration which was pretty bad i thought i threw a rod at first

i got pulled over turned the car off and heard **** flying around coming from presumably the bellhousing and the clutch didn't feel right at all

I restarted that car very briefly after pulling over and as soon as i saw i had full oil pressure i shut it down

My question is how likely is it that my clutch disc exploded at 6000+ rpm vibrated the hell out of my engine and didn't do any damage to the engine?

In a couple days i'm going to tear it apart and i'll have to post pics of the carnage

Happened to me. I was messing around with a buddy on a stock clutch and I just straight hit the limiter in second pretty hard and as soon as pushed the clutch to grab third it made a loud bang and the clutch pedal felt real weird and made a whole bunch of noises. The car wouldn't go into gear when started it was all wired. Here is a pic of what i pulled out. That was the first stock clutch i had break, the second broke on spray but just cracked the center hub and had one of those coil springs fall out.

damn dude that sucks!

I would get a new bell housing, its already been stressed and probably has fractures in it that you can't see. That would also scare me enough to get a bell housing blanket as well. I don't know about you , but I like having feet, and that could've been much worse.

i had a shop take a look at it and they said there wouldn't be any problem welding those holes closed

the bellhousing is actually cracked very slightly in two different areas which the shop also said wouldn't be a problem. Hopefully it wont be a problem, stock bellhousings are hard to find for these cars and im definitely not ready to spend the cash on an aftermarket one right now

F that noise! Get a scattershield, it will be your legs next. I am part of that little club you got going. Blew the clutch disc clean out of my Chevelle. Just broke everything in, had the girl, her father, and little bro in the car. I took it around the block to warm it up, hit the main street and let her have it just about the time the tires stopped spinning in third, the motor kept on going. Luckily I coasted home, but we had to push it up the driveway. Odd being able to leave your car in first and step out side with it running, I don't think the blower or locker had anything to do with it. After I saw that mess I was glad I had a Lakewood scattershield.

Funny, Im pretty sure I shattered mine on wedensday. Although, I really didnt hear any wierd noises, aside from the rev limiter. just a funny vibration. And, a bit of a hijack, any recomendations for a decent, affordable clutch? I probably need to resurface my flywheel too.

I like my spec 2+ but it grabs like a bitch so i would recommend 3.73 gears or more as it gets hard to slip sometimes and more rear end gear would make it easier to take off and launch.

You went beyond breaking a clutch on that one. You basically shredded it. I wouldn't put a stock clutch back in the car after that happened.

i think i know what caused the clutch to blow under further review

The pilot bushing i believe was stock and had already pregnated all of the oil it was originally impregnated with

the bushing therefore was warn beyond belief with far too much clearance causing the input shaft on the tranny to have a little too much free reign

I dont think i missed third as previously thought, i believe that once i dropped the clutch after hitting third gear the clutch disc contacted the the outside of the pressure plate causing all this mess

anyway new clutch is in, i put in a stock replacement for now since money is an issue, i'll be out of college soon and will hopefully have much more money to mess around with
