Cherry picker position

Cherry picker position I'm goin to be pulling the motor once more out of my car and will be using the cherry picker to lift up the front end of the car. I'm curious if anyone has positioned the cherry picker to the side at the fender of the car instead of the front. The reason I ask is I've always placed it in the front, but have scuffed up the front end of my car doing so. I was thinking if I placed it to the side perhaps there will be more room. But at the same time I would bet the car would drift toward the side when raising. Anyone have suggestions?

I did it from the front, just position it far enough back that it doesn't bump the nose
when you raise the car OR back it up a little as the car raises.
Never done it from the side, It seems a little awkward since you need that space for the
cart holding your motor and trans up. But mine had very long legs, so yours may be different.

Yea...well the arm on my cherry picker isn't long enough to raise it all the way up with out rubbing significantly, and I just put on a new front end a few months ago

before lifting the car up, that way the cart slides out with motor and trans on it.
But yes, it should be on jackstands once you get it high enough.
Smaller hoists are not big enough to extend and lift the car without rubbing.
Mine was a little bigger, I set it to 1.5Ton and cleared without much effort.

I always use a canvas strap (like a tow strap) to lift the front end up by thr radiator cross bar. Straps wraps nicely around and is blemish free when done. Never a need for a hook.
I also use a ATV jack under the k-member. It can easily be raised and lowered and I can save the floor jack for under the tranny to balance the load.
I can have a motor out of the car and on the stand in 3.5" hours flat working completely by myself.

the first time i did it from the side bc i couldnt get it to work from the front due to the drop at the end of the garage. it pushes in on your fender pretty good if you arent careful. i laid the fender cover over it and didnt do any damage.
