Default How long with a MP T70 Live?

Just curious what kind of life you are getting out of MP T70's.

Im getting ready to start the C6 manifold project on my TA.

Its my daily driver, and will probably see quite a few miles... just curious if it would be reasonable to expect the MP T70 to live for a lot of miles.

My goal is ~500rwhp for now.

Also curious how the MP T70's compare to the Airwerks S400 turbos... price seems to be comparable.

The T70 is quite a bit smaller than the S400 series, ESPECIALLY an S400 with a T6 flange. The prices are close to the same, but the size isn't.

Contrary to popular opinion, Master Power does make quality turbos. In fact, the starters of the company took some of the technology from Garrett and used it when creating their own design.

How long will it last? Who knows...There haven't been any quantifiable studies done because there are so many variables that affect longevity. The best thing you can do is get a turbosaver oil filter and make sure it's getting sufficient oil flow.

This car is just my daily driver and a way to learn about turbos. The car will be stock bottom end unless i blow it up... and then it would just be a close to stock rebuild (perhaps good rods and pistons).

Do you think the S400 series would just spool slower and have no advantage if ~500-550rwhp was the goal?

A local guy just made 540rwhp and 570ftlb with a 67mm turbo, and i would be more than happy if i achieved similar results. I dont ever really want to take the car much past that, because thats when a LOT of stuff starts needing to be upgraded.

It depends on what A/R you get the S400 in. I know that vendors sell them in /1.10/1.32 - the higher the A/R, the longer it will take to spool. You also have the option of getting the housing with a T4 which will lower the A/R to around .96 (I think). The problem with the S400 is the packaging of the turbo in your engine compartment. It is a HUGE turbo and weight about 55lbs! If it's your dailiy driver, I'd probably look into geting a gt42 or T76 with with a .96 max A/R. Trust me, the worst thing in the world is driving a DD with no low-end, but is an animal up top. It really takes the fun out of driving it.

For that power range, run the T70 or T76, you can't go wrong, I had a T70 on a rear mount in my 99 TA I had, and loved it. I could only imagine how well it would've worked on a front mount!

Thanks for the info.

Yeah i figured T70 would easily get me there... and i just today found out that Masterpower also has a T76.

So for my application would there be any benefit to a MP T76 over the 70?

Its just a "for fun" car, but i would like to get a well matched setup that will work well.

My MasterPower T70 lasted about 6 months of driving before the thrust bearing gave out and it got about a 1/4" of in and out shaft play. My Turbonetics and Garrett units have both gone over 2 years with no issues at all.

Interesting.....

This car will probably get 10-15k miles per year on it.

I know i had planned to drive it to Florida and back next summer (about 2700miles round trip)

As long as you have the oil going to the turbo properly restricted, keeping it cool and well lubricated, it'll last a lot longer than 6 months. If you only want 500whp, I'd go T70 honestly, it's cheaper than the 76, and will get you there. The T76 is an excellent turbo, a couple hundred more, but can make 625+ rwhp.

Who did you buy it from, and did they cover it under warranty. If they gave you any static about returning a defective unit please let me know so that I can cut them off from ever selling Masterpower again.

I've had the MP T70 on my truck (DD) for over a year and a half with NO problems at all. Probably put 15,000 miles with the 4.8 and now about 7,000 miles on it with the LS1 5.7. I've ran 15psi of boost on the LS1 with the T70 but I think that was at the top end of it efficiency range. I also one have on 5.3 in my days 72 Chevy 4x4 pickup. It been on there a year, but only about 2-3000 miles, again no problems.

I haven't had the new motor on the dyno, but on the 4.8 even though my 4x4 and auto drive train, with just a small cam in the 4.8, I made 505rwhp and 535rwqu with 11psi 18 degs of timing, 91 oct gas and meth.

I just today put a MP T76 on my LS1 5.7. It's a tad slower spool, but I think will make more power then the T70 when I turn up the boost. I really like these MP turbos, great units for the price.

I believe the warranty is one year, right Rob?

The warranty is a year, last time I checked. I swear by them, cannot beat them for the $, period.

What mainly attracted me to them was the price, but was a little nervous of the whole "you get what you pay for" saying that people always throw up.

Im not looking to set the world on fire with this thing, just have a little fun and turn a borring daily driver into something fun.

Thanks for all the info guys. I think i have my mind up to go with the MP T70... now to just see if ModularTurbo will cut me a deal if i buy Turbo/WB/BOV and some assorted clamps and couplers all at once

If you know Rob, I'm sure ou realize he'll give you a hell of a deal. Give him a call! You're making a wise choice on the MP T70, I loved that thing, seriously considered running two of them on my 408!

There's a reason Forced Inductions doesn't carry them anymore, do some research. I'm sure some have had them last years and some had them last days, it's just that their failure rate is about 10x that of the other big players in the game.

FWIW I had mine restricted with a .068" restrictor, same exact setup that my Turbonetics unit has been using for 2 years...

There is a readon why FI doesn't carry them anymore and it has nothing to do with the failures. They still offer them through their "Diesel" shop apparently, just talked to Joseph about them last week. They're a brazilian company, and make quality products. They aren't 200lb flowing turbos by any means, but you cannot beat them for a quick spooling budget build.
