Hey Coach.

You mentioned a bracket racing cam… I think basically any cam even stock would do fine. You know bracket racing is all about consistency.

I bracket A LOT and I’m running the TR 230/224 cam in my 346 LS1.

For bracket racing though the best thing for our cars is the electric water pump. You can setup a manual switch in the car to turn on the pump with the engine off in the pits, so you are always pulling up to the line with the same coolant temp.

But if you are looking for a cam to give your car a good run and be consistent, I would recommend any of the Thunder Racing cams. I was running the 224/224 previously and my car was deadly. I switched to the 230/224 and picked up 1 tenth ET.

I don’t doubt the G5X2 cam would be a good choice, I just don’t have any hands on experience with it. I would imagine it could be a good drag only cam. I just know my car is a drag only bracket car and the TR cams have always held up perfectly.

I assume that you mean no *solid* roller cams?? Is that your rule, or are you competing in a specific class??

You may be able to get away with running a more aggressive SR-type of cam with lifters that are still (barely) hydraulic (see: Schubeck). It seems to be this sort of application that the Schubeck's were designed for... I have them in my car (G5X2), and they don't seem to have bought me anything. I think that the reason for that is because the XE-R lobes used on my cam aren't agressive enough to collapse a regular hydraulic lifter; so the extra durability of the Schubeck's doesn't come into play. However, I think that if a more aggressive lobe were used, the Schubeck's would really shine when compared to "full action" hydraulic pieces.

I just wanted to see what ideas I could get from my LS1tech friends. :p

Iam running the TR 230/224 on a 111 lobe cam as it is now.

We have gone as fast as 6.88 at 102 in the 1/8th mile.

I've got some buddies in town that do bracket racing with crazy 26x/26x cams in their 346's on stock heads, but with lifts in the low 500's.

Nice 1/8m times nice coach, especially for a 346 N/A!

I've got the same cam, I'm running 7.0 1/8's myself. I'll get my 6.xx next time at the track. I'm going with bigger gears and tires (ET Drag) and finally upgrading my rear suspension right now. I went 7.0 with a 1.65 60' on ET Streets.

What powerband are you looking for? What compression and header type?

Judging by your converter/tranny choice 5000-7400rpm?

Depending on where you want to peak/shift I would go BIG traditional split. 236/244 on 111/112LSA or similar

Let me give ya the low down on my Hot Rod.

Thunder Racing Forged 346 LS1
Compression 12 to 1
230/224 on 111 lobe cam
Thunder Racing Headers with flow master mufflers
power glide trans(no trans-brake)
Trans King 4800 stall convertor
5.14 gears
30x9x15 slicks

3150 lbs with me in her.

The best time so far is 6.88 at 102.

I just want some ideas about what size cam you would run to make my Hot Rod go faster.

104 unleaded race gas always.

If Geoff at Thunder can make it so I could run regular race gas like VP 116 that would be great since I just got a new 55 gallon drum this past weekend. :p

Don't run 116 gas Coach, it will foul out your O2 Sensors. That gas is for like carbed engines running 14:1 CR and stuff.

I'm running 11.2:1 CR in my motor with 100 Octane VP Fuel. I'm able to run 31* timing at WOT with 0 KR.

What kind of timing are you running with 104 gas in your hot rod?

Yeah just run the 104 unleaded unless you want to tune in open loop and bypass your O2's al together. I would just run the 104, you can run 31 degrees WOT timing with that gas and 12:1 comp no problem. You could also lean it out a good bit for power as well

Especially if you keep your coolant temps reasonable. (~165-175 degrees)

Chris,
LS6 intake. The same one that comes on the 2002 Z/28's

Raughammer,
Forged bottom end. Spin it as high as I can. I want the Hot Rod to run deep into the 6's in the 1/8 mile but run the number everytime. :p

I didn't know if you were using a custom sheetmetal intake. That will definitely affect cam choice and shiftpoints

with stock LS6 intake I'd look at a shiftpoint of about 6800rpm in your app.

You think it would be worth it to go with a sheet metal intake? and pick the cam accordingly?
