Is catia v5 hard to use?

Took some time to get used to it after using Unigraphics for years.

Depends what kind of work you want to do. Most aircraft companies are now using Catia V5.

Ya thats exactly what i was wondering about. Aircraft companies. Where did you learn Catia V5? And how long did it take you to become profiecient and confident?

How hard is microstation and solid works?

Learned Catia V5 at Northrop Grumman back in 2004. Took a good few months to become proficient in it. I also have it on my home computer since am using Unigraphics at the current job. I do some design work at home for a few small companies.

Small world.... my father-in-law works at northrop Grumman, and i have been trying to get my foot in the door there. And that is why i wanted to learn Catia V5. Do you have any advice on how to get in to that company?

I worked at Northrop in El Segundo. Need to get to one of their hiring fairs that they have a few times per year.

I think Catia V5 is better for surfacing type work. Both are very good software programs.

Sounds good. Thanks for all the info. I think i will look into taking some courses in the Catia area. Because i know a lot of places use that now and i want to become more profiecient in another area.

Wise choice. The local community college offers a course in town.

My work is all mechanical and civil

Thought most civil work was Autocad and possibly Pro-E.

I know a few space companies are still using Pro-E and some use Solidworks.

I use Autodesk Inventor and Autocad. I am pretty proficient with Unigraphics nx3 and i have some Pro E and Catia experience. Autodesk is about the easiest one to learn, but it's only good for tool design i think. We actually use it for product and tool design, but for what we design where i work, its actually overkill. I'm thinking of getting into some side work at home as well. I could easily obtain some software on my laptop, i just need a small client base. I have been using Inventor and autocad since i was 15 and im 22 now. CATIA is a bitch to use in my experience, but that isnt much. It is definately the #1 program to learn in my opinion!

Caltrans Uses Microstation exclusively so a lot of the major Civil Firms use it as well.

I'm a much bigger fan of using autocad with my civil and map extensions.

For Solid Modeling solidworks is by far my favorite.

Do you have your B.S. in mech engineering? That's odd that you can't find work. I'm still in school but all my friends that have graduated with ME degrees have found work.

No i dont have my B.S. in mechanical engineering. I work at an engineering company that does mechanical engineering for material handleing. The work im talking about finding is on the side, and it is in the architectural field. And the reason i cant find it there is cause of the economy.
