Default 5.0 Notchback Mustang vs. my Trans-Am WS6

Leaving work yesterday night I noticed a couple of cars sitting in a parking lot across the street so I decide to drive over to see if its anyone I knew. I pulled up a recognized my friends Civic and Eclipse, and they were also with someone with a primer grey 5.0 Notchback, I have seen him around before but never talked to him. We just talked for a little while, and I asked the Mustang driver basic questions, when I asked him if he had anything done he smirked, started the car up and revved it. I did the same with my T/A. The kid with the Eclipse then said I feel a Ford vs. Chevy race comming on and we laughed it off. Well we kept talking about stuff and again about racing each other. So we decided to go check out a nice local road we both knew about hoping it was in decent shape. We drive it up and down and surprisingly it was good. I say lets go on 3 honks with me honking.

We line up, I honk...he takes off! He jumped me on the 1st honk! I then quickly left and tried to catch him. I was spinning ALL through 1st gear trying to ride it out waiting for it to hook. I was catching him though while spinning. I then relized I wasen't going to hook so I threw it into 2nd....still spinning but catching. I eventually hooked at the end of 2nd and hit 3rd with me rocketing past him and beating by about 2 1/2 lengths. We then decide to go again...

He asks if he jumped me and I said yes, he apologized saying he thought we were going on the 1st honk. I then said no 3, so we line up again. I honk 3 times and we both left evenly. I spun through 1st again with him right next to me, hit 2nd and "only" spun a little less then halfway through it. Once I hit 3rd it was over, I took off. 4th gear made it worse crossing the "finish" in 4th gear with me atleast 6 1/2 lengths in front of him. We then cruise back to "town" to talk about it. Really nice/cool kid, always good to meet new people through cars and make friends, not enemies after races. He said his 5.0 is cammed, headers, exhaust, shifter, etc. My mods are in my sig.

I hate spinning soo much, I have nearly brand new tires on the car and don't launch, just slip the clutch, if I nail it I spin. Man cold weather sucks when street racing haha. Its good for the track, but not a cold, untreated back road. I hope you liked the story!

considering 5.0s came with 225 flywheel hp and this cammed one was maybe making 300 flywheel hp(very optimistic hp #) the ls1 would still kill him. 5.0s are very very slow unless heavily modded

Good Kill sir.
WTF are you calling me an *** for? He told me his car was somewhere around 300 crank HP.......and mine is 360RWHP. I raced 5.0's with cams and exhaust before this with the same out come, I just posted this story. His car is prolly a mid 13 sec. car. Im not bashing it, just posting the results so sorry if you can't handle it.

One kid has the races on video....hes supposed to let me know when he puts them online and I will post them here if that day ever comes.

Good kill OP, your car makes good numbers for what mods it has.
As far as the notch goes, the 5.0 doesn't respond all that well to just a cam. It needs full H/C/I before it really wakes up plus all the other bolt ons you want to throw at it. Gears are a huge plus. Yes, they're underpowered but they're also an older car. They can get pretty damn quick once you build them up however.

Doh!

I ran a 8x Gt with gt40 heads intake, 303 cam, paxton at 6psi with a 75 shot and beat him, not by much but I beat him...would that be considered highly modded?

Nice kill.

I used to really want a 5.0 mustang (back around 1992). I thought they were just cool cars. They were pretty quick back then compared to your average street competition. I would probably still buy one if they were cheaper. Those ford guys are proud of the fox body 5.0s. LT1 fbodies can be found cheaper than a decent 5.0.

GT40 heads and intake are parts that came stock on various 5.0s. The alphabet cam is a very basic and super mild cam. The paxton is at low boost, and I don't understand why someone would run only 6 psi and nitrous, but regardless that is not a heavily modded 5.0. That's a dumbass who doesn't know what he's doing. A 12.4 is a decent time for a 5.0, but it can be done pretty easily without increasing displacement, and without forced induction. I had an AFR headed 302 with a Cobra intake and a cam that went 11.9@112.9 mph in a 5.0 hatch with a full interior. It was not heavily modded.

LOL all that and you beat him?

My 5.0 with little heads, baby cam, little intake, and 8psi ran 11.4@121mph through a slipping King Cobra clutch. I don't know if you would call that highly modded, I wouldn't. Highly modded IMO is an aftermarket block 363 with some 225 heads, a solid roller, and a Super Vic intake. Find you a Mustang like that and you will find a new respect for the 5.0

I thought that was funny as hell. If I had a cam only 5.0 and a LS1 anything came up to me and wanted to run the last thing I would do is smirk! He had no chance the minute you pulled into the parking lot.
