How many miles (kilomters) are on the car? If it's a lot, I'd start by replacing the wear items like ball joints, tie rod ends, as well as control arm and sway bar bushings. Shocks are a good idea also, but can run up the cost quickly.
If you want the car to sit lower, like most people do, a set of springs will do that for you, but shocks would then pretty much be a necessity, as A) stock or worn out shocks won't work well with lowering springs, and B) since you have to remove the front shocks to install the springs, there's no sense in doing the job twice.
