Never seen one like that before. The one that I use is WAY more involved than that!

I've seen them before like this on some websites but always wondered how the heck ya make it work. I want to buy one if I'm smart enough to use it.

follow the directions for the device,I have and use them for GM 10 bolt 7.5/7.625,8.2/8.5 and the 12 bolt.they match up in end result to the other tools/methods.
the GM OEM pinion gears are difficult to use that tool on because they have a slight conical face where the tool requires a flat pinion gear face.

Be sure you read the part that says to be used on gear sets with pinion depth marked on them. A lot of new gears, especially ford 8.8's, GM's, etc do not mark the pinion depth making this tool useless.

Pinion depth is not a spec found in a book, it's a specific measurement for each gear set made.
The pinion depth setting does not get you 'set up', it just gives you a starting point, even if you use the best depth setting tool, your final check is going to be tooth contact pattern with marking compound.

It's not that hard to do it with just compound.
