I remember years ago Summit had these and when they had their blue page specials they were just about giving them away. Never found out if anyone bought them all or if they were scraped out.

On another website, too bad someone bought it about two weeks ago.
Not the strongest rear I know, but enough for my car. It sold for $1300.
From what I've come up with this was a dealer part you could order for $2500.
I guess these days if they still sold it new it still wouldn't be a good deal.
BUT I know a ton of junkyards that have a set price for ALL rear ends, so someone could conceivably find one for $200, although highly unlikely.
And yes I also understand it would not be a bolt in and go rear, but you'd probably only need to mess with the brakes.

I guess if summit was selling them, they could end up in any year 3rd gen.
But from what I've read they came in a few late 80's maybe early 90's TA's
I've heard the turbo'd v-6's got them and no V8 cars did.
My point in putting these pics up I guess what to show people what you might find in a junkyard thats stronger than a 7.5, and will at least bolt up to a fourth gen. And to try and deter people from thinking they're going to find a strong f-body bolt rear in at a junkyard.
So basically look at the TA mount, if anyone sees a rear with a TA mount and it's not a 7.5, grab it. Unless it's a 9 bolt (yes BOLT) don't grab one of those.
The flat price on all rears at my local yard is $150 to $200. The one in the pics sold for $1300 so even if you don't want it chances are you can sell it and make something off it.

That rear never came in a 89 TTA (i owned #901) they have Aussie 9 bolts with 3.27 gears which is stronger than the 7.5" 10 bolt (not by much) ....That Dana 44 only came in 91-92 Firehawks and was available over the counter from GM... So yes it could be found in other 82-92 F-bodys if that person bought it for their car years ago from GM ...I doubt they would send their car to the junkyard with a rear that cost them a $1k or more ..but hey good luck looking

Its too bad that this rear end isnt still in production. It would serve as a point for people that need/want a stronger rearend but don't want to spend more that $2500 on something that goes in a street car. My guess is that this thing could be built to handle a little bit of stress too.

A little research revealed a page to an old GM catalog that had part numbers to the parts and stuff used in these axles.
http://www.s-series.org/htm/tech/GMP...ts/182-185.pdf
Here's another page with info/part numbers on them:
http://www.camarotech.com/differential.html
Too bad there's nothing to buy. I'd be all over one of these things!

They only used that rearend in the 1991 and 1992 Firehawks. I *think* there were only about 200 of those cars ever produced.
The Borg-Warner 9-bolt looks very similar, but it has a 9-bolt cover, and an 8-bolt differential. It was found in the 85-89 IROC's, and GTA's. It uses a 7.75" gear, and bolt-in axles. Not much better than the common 10-bolt.

People have pulled front tires and run -9 in the 1/4 with 8.5 rears.
One main thing I was trying to point out here is that if a person thinks they're going to find a stronger than stock bolt in f-body rear at a junkyard, this, as rare as it may be, is going to be the ONE. Plus the deal Summit had adds to the number.
I've seen some rare **** in junkyards, I know it's not everyones "thing" to 'window shop' at junkyards much, you'd be surprised of the **** I've found.

I should have also said that the Dana 44 is the strongest bolt in rear that you might find in a junkyard besides the 7.5/7.625 or the 9 bolt.
And thats a big might, as in probably not.
You might have better luck finding a Dana 60, Ford 9", 12 bolt in a wrecked F-Body that got taken from the owner before he or she had time to swap the stock one back in place.

Yeah those dana 44's were offered through GM performance parts. Big money...$3500 if I remember.... then they had the bare housings for $2000.... then they were gone. not too popular.
