Default Running out of gear....

3.73s, 26" tall tire, and some nitrous my car is sitting at redline.

I don't want to change gear ratio... I would go to 27" tires but no one makes a size that would fit a 17x11.. I heard something about a 295/45/17 tire but I can't find it anywhere...and I don't want to step up to a 28" tire.

I was thinking of bumping the rev limiter up a little bit...I think it is 6100 on 1-2 shift, and 6050 on 2-3 shift...whatever Steve @ LSXTune.com put it at.

Would putting it at 6300, those extra 200 rpms, help out any?

it might but it might also put the engine at or beyond its safty limit. if the tuner set the redline at that rpm its usually for a reason. but im no expert

Well, the stock tach says 6500..hah, but Steve @ LSXTune said he set the limiter at 6100...so that is why I am doubting the stock tach accuracy.

I can't find those anywhere.

At this point I am really considering swapping to 3.50 gears, then I can keep my same size tire and not worry about pushing my stock motor too hard with the RPMs...

Do you guys think dropping from 3.73s to 3.50s will slow me down much? I don't mind losing a little bit...but something like 0.3 will not be welcome..hah

I wouldnt be to worried about pushing the stock motor a few hundred more rpm. Maybe add some valve springs.

If I'm going to the trouble of adding valve springs, then I'll add a cam, but then I might as well go one more step and do heads, then I might as well get better headers, then I'll probably need a FAST intake, then I'll want to beef up my transmission..... haha

Ha, I just suggested, in your other thread, that instead of swapping gears again, to swap to better springs and pushrods. I just saw this post above now but I still think springs and pushrods might be a better fix for the long term but of course it's up to you. What are your future plans for the car? That might help make your decision.

But I'm ordering a 9" rearend soon...so right now, "swapping gears" would be easier.

So the new gears will be in your new 9 inch, got it.

According to the gear chart, with an A4, 26 inch tire, and 3.73 gears you should be 5800 RPM at 120 MPH which is the trap speed with nitrous in your sig. Does that sound right? If so, you would have another couple hundred RPM to play with before your rev limiter as is. With 3.50 gears the chart says 6000 would be 133 MPH.

I've revvin past 5800 easy...but that calculator doesn't account for aftermarket converters with more slip.

plus your trap speed is the "average" speed of the last 100'....

bump it to 6300rpm and shut the spray off at 6200rpm.

good luck

Sorry, wasn't thinking about those two things. I figured something didn't add up though since you said you were on the rev limiter.

If you're ordering a new 9 inch I say go with the 3.50 or 3.55 gears or whatever best fits your future plans. I mean, you're going to make the car faster in the future, right? So, you could probably use a little more gear later even if your rev limit is a little higher in the future as well.

I think your good on gear. Talk to your tuner. Ask why the limiter is where it is. Converter slip shouldnt be too much at the top of third. From what other users have posted the ss3600 is a pretty efficent stall. If your not H/C it then id keep the gear.

I just got my HPTuners in today...rev limiter was set at 6400.. so the last 400rpms of the pass I had no spray counted for a little loss in MPH.

Yeah, it is a great stall..it was just a combination of other things working against me..hah

I'll be ready for next season though

Cool. Did you not feel it bogging the last 400 rpm without the spray?

Either way glad you got the kink worked out. Hope you hang'em high this next season.
