Default Mass air Flow sensor question

I am in the process of making My T/A lil faster, TSP heads -cam- ported fast 92, what I want to know is this. I have seen guys running with no MAF sensor Just a tube or hose from the air cleaner to the throttle body. I will have a custom dyno tune on my car anyway to benefit all this power, so can the tuner just delete the MAF? I have a volant twin CAI and I believe I would have to buy an aftermarket larger MAF to accomodate the heads/intake, but if its not that big of a deal why not just have it deleted and save the money? I dont know if this is a good thing or common or bad? My question probably shows what I know about the matter. Any advice will be appreciated. Pros -- Cons?

Naturally Aspirated the MAF will work fine-no matter what camshaft/heads are on the combo.

So I dont need to get a larger one, or an aftermarket one? Will the stock one work fine, if it cost me horsepower than I will need to upgrade (unless we are talking about 1 or 2 horses). thanks keep it comin.

On a side note, would you be willing to sell your stock air filter base? I really need one and noticed you have a volant.

Back on topic.

MS4
239/242 .649/.609 111 LSA

No problems idling @ 700rpms

I also run TSP's 5.3 Stg 2.5 heads. This is on a 98 Z28 A4 with a 4k stall, 3.73gears in a Moser 9" locker.

Air / Fuel / Spark is a fragile mixture that can be dialed in with the right equipment and experience.

To the OP, you don't need a bigger MAF. The software is the limiting factor.

well i do agree with your set up u have posted a maf will work fine. but put some large port heads l92's cnc versions are upwards of 280cc and a big camshaft and watch how the maf acts at idle. will notice some funky *** readings. i mean with big camshafts at idle can be upwards of 80-90 kpa especially if the cam has a bunch of overlap. now when u get off idle and the engine starts creating some vacuum and smooth out a bit then the maf works pretty good. this is what i have seen anyways. but i guess some of these set ups were solid roller set ups ssoooooo........

The stock GM software is setup to blend MAF and MAP readings below 4k rpms due to reversion and turbulent airflow.

With setups that have very low vacuum custom software with low end Alpha-N tuning capabilities work out nicely.

i'll agree with that.....but if all u have is the standard op system and a crazy camshaft i still think sd is the way out.

You are correct....to a point. SD tuning is a "way out".

Lets be very clear.

Speed Density tuning is a barbaric soloution to a tuning issue. It's one thing to have a dedicated race car that goes from point A to point B at WOT most of it's life. The concept of converting a system that is set up for mass air is crazy.

Why do people do it? Becuase it is the easy way out. Why do the tuning companies sell it? Because people buy it.

For a street driven performance car mass air is the only way to go.

There are mass air meters on the market that resolve many of the problems found in OEM mass air meters.

I cringe whenever I see someone list SD Tuning as if it's a performance upgrade. It's more like a performance band aid.

Have a great day!

The larger MAF housing will help you if your intake bottleneck is there, or if your g/cyl is outside its range.

Although I'd run SD if I had a crazy intake with 8 TB's or something.
