Default Cam swap on 176,000 mile LS1

I just got a 98 Z28 6 speed w/ 176,000 miles for $6,000. I figure even if the engine blows, I can get a used LS1 engine for about $2000 and I'll still be better off than if I got a low-mileage Z28 for $10k++. Or it'd be a great time to get a 382 or 396 short block from one of the sponsors.

Until that time, I'm going to leave the car mostly stock. I got a 2002 LS6 cam and springs for $175 just to liven it up a little above 5000rpm, but I'm wondering what else I should do at the same time. I'm planning on a rollmaster timing chain and some tr55 plugs too, but leaving everything else alone until something breaks.

I'm really tempted by the pacesetter headers for $330, since I my C5's headers were $1200 . Maybe an ASP UD pulley too, while I've got the car apart for the cam swap. I'll keep my eye open for a used LS6 intake manifold once they are cheap after the F.A.S.T. LSX manifold comes out, and get rid of the EGR then. But other than that, I'll leave it stock. Er, maybe a lid, but that's it.

Comments?

PS: The car dynoed 293rwhp at FLP, when it had 160,000 miles.

sounds like a pretty good deal...i would replace the oil pump as well as this only adds a few minutes to the whole ordeal. Other than that 293 after 160k thats not bad for a 98...even at 6k miles so it sounds like youve got a pretty solid engine.

Maybe fill the crankcase with some of that new oil "for high mileage engines." These LS1's are very powerful engines but even a new one likes to drink oil!

293 rwhp with 160,000 miles on it.

That's incredible.

Change the springs and valve seals while you are in there just like I did on your C5. I'd also change the trans fluid and rear end diff fluid just to double check all that. We already talked about the oil pump, it sounds like it still makes great pressure for stock so I wouldn't really mess with it. Just get an o-ring, doh!
