Default Initial impressions Patriot LS6 style head &TSP231/237

I was running the TR220 112lsa cam and a set of the uncut Patriot stage II 5.3's before. I really like this combo because of the great power it made (416rwhp/392rwtq) while still being friendly to drive every day. With that being said, I was very apprehensive about stepping up to a MUCH larger cam when I did my latest head swap to the new LS6 style patriot heads. I started the car up Sunday night in my garage with open headers to let the valve springs heat cycle and scared myself, the idle was VERY choppy. Well, after I got home from work yesterday I connected the exhaust up and that helped things alot, now for the road test. With the TR220 and stock programming the car would surge and try to stall some when coming to a stop.. The mail order tune that Jason from TSP put in the computer is EXCELLENT, no surging or idle problems at all!! The difference while driving to work this morning really impressed me. I could tell that below 2,000 rpms the old combo may have had a touch more torque, but anything above that is no comparison, the new cam comes on hard and pulls strong. Most of my 30 mile drive is on highway at about 60 or 65mph and I was able to run 6th gear all the way down to 55 mph with no bucking or surging at all.. that made me happy. I've been smiling so much at work this morning that the guys I work with asked me if I had a "quickie" before I came in today!!

How much for the cam and mail order tune from TSP? You are making want to jump on those LS6 heads from PP. Didn't you say OCT. 4 was the dyno date? Can't wait.

What did you do with the old 5.3's and cam? Do you still have them? Are you going to want to part with them? I've got first dibs if you do.

Texas speed has a KILLER package deal on the heads, cam, pushrods, and timing chain set for $2,299 SHIPPED!! And that's with the LS6 style heads!! The mail order tune is around $300 more added to that. Give Jason out there an email.. he's a really helpful guy and I have bothered the hell out of him the past two weeks trying to decided which way I wanted to go with my cam choice.

And yes.. there will be dyno numbers on Oct 4!!

I sold the cam on here in the classifieds yesterday and Terry at Patriot bought my 5.3 heads back at a pretty fair price so that he could "disect" them and see if there was anything he could improve on.

I had a couple of people mail me and ask me if I ended up using the 918 springs. Yes, I used them and the valve train is MUCH MUCH more quiet than it was when I had the 978's and the TR220. I actually belive it is as quite as stock now!! The 978's and TR220 made so much noise that I would get paranoid about once every two weeks and pull the valve covers, just to check and make sure a rocker wasn't loose or something else was wrong.

Hey Gomer glad your liking the heads & cam setup. I can't wait to see the thing dyno Friday! Now all you need is a electric water pump! Does the car have a cutout on it?

I do have a cut out.. but after this latest round of mods.. there is NO way I can afford an electric WP right now, maybe I can get one in a month or two. Btw.. check your PM's, I sent you one.

Scott,
You need an early Christmas present in the form of a electric water pump.
