Default Flaking on wheel coating?

I have a 2000 WS6 and noticed that something is happening to my wheels yesterday after I washed the car. The wheels are the original 5 spoke aluminum WS6 wheels and it looks like there is some kind of protective coating over the aluminum that is starting to flake off. I can see a difference and can feel a difference when I run my finger over it.

My question is what causes this and what can I do to fix it?

Sounds like the clearcoat is coming off. Just strip them down to bare aluminum and polish them and they will look great.

Thanks!!!

Any suggestion on how to remove the clear coat?

Also, by doing this will there be more up-keep on the wheels since there is no clear coat?
