Default LQ9 help

I am new to the site...and wanted to ask a question. I have a 53,000 miles 6.0 LQ9 that I am using in a restoration. Its a 69 2wd blazer(fulltime roadster). It will be just a cruiser,,,,,but 450 to 500hp would be nice. I will be running a 9in. with 411 gears with a 4l60. Is it possible (reasonably priced), and if so how and how much.....any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have finished building my LQ9 408 long block. It has Eagle rods, Eagle 4" crank, 4.030 bore with Ross pistons, Moroso iol pan and windage tray, L92 heads, Ported, L92 Carb style intake, and a few other secrets, I have $10275 tied up in it so far, and now I am working on the fuel rails, injectors, and throttle body for it. But I built mine for 600hp on motor and am going to shoot another 250 to 400 hp shot of nitruos on mine.

WOW....man that is impressive....but that is a little too much HP and too much money for me. I was wondering about keeping the short block and intake...maybe changing out the heads and cam.....I don't know... thats why I am asking...thanks for your reply

I sure don't...the tub is on a rotisserie, and I am waiting on my (porterbuilt C4 dropmember) to finish the chassie. I still have a lot of work to do. I have a freshly rebuilt 402bb, that I was gonna use, but decided to go with the LS motor. Do you have any pics of yours, and what kind of condition is it.....

I would think if you are planning to freshen it up, do a cam, you can probly get it dune for $2000 or maybe a little less. The gaskets are priced like they are gold! Pistons are not priced bad. I would say, bore it as little as possible (0.030" MAX), turn the crank, resize the rods, balance it, and have the heads rebuilt for the cam you chose. My question to you is are you planning to run it fuel injected or are you thinking to convert it to carb/distributor? If you do not have the injection system, buying everything you will need can get very pricey real quick, plus you will either need to take it down to be programed or you will need to buy a tuner software like HP Tuners, so that you can get the factory PCM to work. If you go carbed, you can get several different manifold choices from Edelbrock (including a dual 4 barrel intake I just saw in one of their fliers). You can then either buy the GMPP front cover distributor kit or buy an electronic spark control like the one Edelbrock sells. I would think 450 to 500 hp would not be hard to achieve. One last little upgrade could be using the L92 heads with the corisponding intake. You can get them from Scoggin Dickey for a very reasonable price. They can be used on 4.00" bores, and make for a very nice increase power. They are the same heads being used on the 6.2L making something like 405 hp stock. Good lock and keep us posted.

yes I do have all the factory injection , wiring, and pcm with it, and I would prefer to keep it on the motor..... if I have to do a few things to make it perform better I will....and yes the 402 is for sale. I am trying to find all the paperwork that I had done. It was built by one of the best engine builders around here. I have not listed it because I am looking for all the info on it. I know its a 396 bored to a 402...oval port heads, forged trw pistons, balanced, ......I cant remember everything

a 4l60e might have trouble handling that kind of power...you might want to look into a 4L80

Were you respnding to me? If so, I do have a 4L80 sittin on my work bench at home. I need to take it down and go threw it with the mods I need. It will end up with a Trans Brake in it. I am going to order a Moser 9" probley by the end of this next week. I presently have a max effort built 4L60 in it right now, but i do not trust the 4L60's to live long after 600hp. I am working for a goal of 800+hp at the rear wheel, so going to the 4L80 now will be my best option. That is considering the fact I still want a lock-up 4 speed auto.

I would think an LQ9 with just 53,000 miles wouldn't need to be rebuilt. They have decent compression, especially for street use, and with the right cam and a set of 1 3/4 headers, I would think you coud easily reach your HP goals. I have a 6.0 with L92 heads and a mild cam (222x234) that is carbureted now, but when it still had the L76 FI intake, it made 526hp at the flywheel. The thing I noticed in your post that you might want to re-think is the gear ratio. With the deep first gear in the 4l60, you might want a more reasonable gear in the rear axle. I myself run a 4.10 gear, but I have a 2004R trans which has a 2.74 low compared to your 3.04 low gear. Be good for pullin' stumps though, LOL.
