I have a question for the Houston people
What is the economy like there right now? Is it going pretty good or is everyone having tough times? The reason I ask is I have a job I was interested in applying for but was unsure of how it was going there. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!!

We're doing good for now and alot better than the rest of the country. If gas doesnt start going back up we will be in trouble. I work in the oilfield and most of the drilling rigs are getting stacked out. Which means no wells will be hooked up. That means no new pipelines, no compressor station, means no work. This city runs on oil and gas if there is nothing new being pumped out then everyone will start getting laid off.

Edit: I am not disagreeing with the fact that we were getting gouged but if any thing the rig workers here are working to help relieve that.

Houston in general has not been affected as much by the economic slump like the rest of the country has. Why? Because our homes were not overpriced to begin with, and our cost of living was already lower than most major cities. The city is heavily influenced by oil/gas, medical, and specialty service industries.

correct, and those are all things that are always necessary which is another reason we are still doing ok.

I work for a company that provides service equipment for the oilfield. I have noticed that some major operators are putting holds on (their) projects due to finances. Its not affecting us right now, but could be a delayed effect (like in a year or so). But right now things seem ok...

thanks guys! i am probably gonna stay put for now. i am making around $90k US here and it's tax free. i looked into the job there and i would be a contractor which means i'd be self employed. they are offering $100k US but i'd have all the taxes and expenses come out of that and would only end up with $50k or $60k a year.
