Post What gear to go with?

I've got an 02 T/A with the stock gears in it. I noticed the rear end began leaking a tiny bit so I need to replace the gasket and figured I might as well put new gears in it anyway. Right now I'm leaning towards 3.90's as I don't think I quite want to go to 4.10s and 3.73s might not be a big enough jump. I put a good mount of miles on this car and drive back forth to MD (6 hours one way) about 1 - 2 times a month. And for about 160 miles there the speed limit is 70 (yes believe it or not I usually only cruise at 70). I know right now I get between 26-28 mpg on that trip. Will going to 3.90's decrease it that much? I know the rpms will sit I think 150-200 higher with 3.90s and more so with the 4.10s. Any opinions would be great as I am going to get this done within the next few days.

EDIT Also as far as eventual mods will go, I am going to eventually do h/c, nothing more.

Auto or M6 ? I have a 3.70 gear in my A4 car and its fine at 70mph, I think the 3.73`s are the perfect gear in an A4. I have no experience with the M6 but I have read that 4.10`s are the way to go. There should be a bunch of post`s about this that you can read for hours. You will love the new gears!

I was thinking about 4.10s but I dont want to kill my mileage at 70 I'd just like to hear about what other people have experience with gas mileage and usually they dont [post about that they post before they get the gears and not after.

I have a m6 Hawk also that is a D/D too. I just replaced mine with the 3.73's. I love this set up. I don't go to the track, so I really don't need to be tearing anything up on the streets. My commute is 13 miles one way. 6 miles in the city, and 7 on a 4 lane highway. I do alot of riding in the evening that is stilled mixed driving. I was impressed at how the car woke up, even though so many said it would'nt.

If your an m6,,,,,,,,,,,,You must jump to 4.10's.........I have 4.11's and am going to 4.56's.....

I drive 250-300 miles per week.......In 6th gear at 75mph my rpms are 2000....
In 5th gear at 75 mph, 3500 rpms....

You will love the 4.10s on the street......

DO NOT FEAR THE GEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

121mph at 6500rpms in 4th gear with a 275/40/17 tire.. 121mph is not enough for a properly setup h/c car in the 1/4.

I think I'm set on 3.90s, I'm in the same dilemma right now.

I am also keeping my stock wheels on it. I hear you 00SS, my buddy said he recommends 3.73s as 3.90s and 4.10s I will be fighting for traction badddd and I dont want that.

4.10s without a doubt. I've had those and now I have 4.30s.

Also, there are a TON of threads on this subject. Do a search and you will find days worth of reading.

4.10s. You have 2 overdrives I wouldn't be too concerned with mileage. I would honestly go 4.56 in an M6 but thats me

Many people run 4.10 with M6 and are very pleased with the outcome.

i would look at whats popular, and go one step futher. people said for me too go 3.73s cause i had an auto, so i went 3.90s and love them. Then everybody said to get a 3600 stall in the tranny, so naturally i went 4000 and never looked back. just my .2

4.10's are a blast on the street as stated. But if I had to do it over I'd probly go with 3.73's, now with all my mods. I can't ever roll race using 1st, car won't move. But it is awesome when I can be rolling at 50 in 5th, drop it down to 2nd and lite the tires up. lol

As for mileage, bone stock my car was 29.2. I changed gears and I think the lid, exact same drive I got 29.6. Thats with a reprogrammed pcm, so the calculations are correct.
