Default Good cam with ls6 springs?

I know I could go with some patriot dual golds, but I would like to go with LS6 springs because they are known to be more forgivable, and drivable. I've been looking at the ls6 springs and I have a few questions.

1. Do I need new seats, seals, locks, and retainers?
2. What type of cam could I run with these springs and have a reliable setup? I would really like to have the TR 224 or something close.

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks.

If you want to run a tr 224 I would go with a comp 918 spring. Its a verry good spring and its beehive shape makes it stronger. I had the this setup before my current setup and it worked verry well. You dont need new locks or retainers but the TI retainers will make the valve train alot lighter. Seals would be a good idea if the engine has some miles on it. I think the max lift on the ls6 spring is around .550" so if you are set on the ls6 spring keep the lift on the lower side.

you're chosing your cam according to what springs you like??

little reverse of normal...don't you think?

as conan said, the 918s are a great spring and not horribly priced.

the added lift capability will give you a much greater choice on cams.

stock seats, seals, locks and retainers are all fine...while you COULD upgrade, you don't have to. i've been running stock parts on my Tv1 for 4yrs.

the 224 or the 228 cams are hard to beat

When I talked with the guys at Thunder Racing, they discouraged me from using beehives. I used the Patriot springs they recommended.

As Conan said, you are going about this all wrong.

A) First determine what your hp goals are.
B) Then determine how your car will be used and what driveablity you need.
C) Determine what your budget is.
D) Then choose the cam that fits A & B while the supporting mods (springs, retainers, seats, pushrods, oil pump, timing set, stall, gears, etc.) required for the cam will fit within C.

What was there reason for staying away from the beehives? I bought the tr224 and 918's about 4 years ago from TR and thats what they recomended

The LS6 springs are NOT recommended with our 224 cam. Due to the aggressivness of the lobes, those springs will not allow you to reach the full RPM potential of the camshaft.

As far as recommending the Patriots over the 918, that all stems from the time when we were having issues with 918's breaking. Comp acknowleged the problem and came back with an improved spring which I have used with great success. There are still some of us left with a bad taste due to those problems but I have NOT seen any issues with the new 918's and will work fine with our 224 cam. That being said, some people prefer the comfort of having a double spring vs. a single spring and if you ask 10 people their opinion on the matter, 5 will tell you to go singles and 5 will tell you to go doubles. In the end, they both will do the job, it just depends on your budget and experience.

Thanks,
Shane

if you run a soft lobed cam the ls6 springs are fine...I ran them for over a year using a small vinci cam...220/224 551
but the lobes on their cams are not real aggressive....FWIW I gained over 4mph at the track with that cam vhp#66 and it had a nice chop as well...

Thanks for the info, I hadn't heard of any problems with the "OLD" 918's untill now and you guys have been great with your recommendations in my orders.

those Pac1218s look like a pretty good deal. i may go with those along with a TR224 and some hardened pushrods.

Nice, I think you will be happy with your choice. I would save up for a LS6 intake if I were you. Then you'd have a very solid car.

The PAC's will work great with the TR224. You'll be very happy indeed...

09jyounger, MPFD is right. The Hotcam and the Z06 cam would work great with those springs. I have those in my motor. No issues. If you want a big cam get bigger and stronger springs. If you small or mild cam those two mentioned here are good with the stock yellow Z06 springs. Not trying to start a war here with the spring and cam thing, just answering the OG question. Referring to question #1 it's always recommended.

PAC 1218s and a tr-224 is a great combo. as mentioned above its the lift and the lobe that dictates spring choice.
