Default Failures of stock lifters??

Just wondering about any history of failures of stock lifters. We had a problem while pulling a motor on the dyno the other day and it sounds like a lifter let loose. I am taking the head off tomorrow but was looking for a little insist from anyone that has had issues. I have found the stock lifters to typically be VERY reliable and never had had a problem with modified motors.

so are aftermarket lifters absolutely preferred with a really strong valvetrain?

I have always used the stock ones in ALL my motors.

Get a good lite valve train and top of the line springs. Your good to go. (IMO)

The car in questionn is an 02' C5. I have heard a few instances where the pin that holds the roller wheel on has broken or fallen out.

I lost a couple of lifters. 50K miles on the stockers. I was running a 230/230 112LSA XE-R cam with them but threw in Comp R lifters afterwards.
If you have the heads off swap out the stockers IMO. Especially with any sort of double spring and aggressive lobe.

With the older lifters (pre-'01) the support around the roller goes all the way around rather than having gaps. This is a beefier design in this regard. The later model lifters sometimes (but rarely) are prone to cracking in this area. I assume they may have changed this to reduce the valvetrain weight a bit.

I changed mine due to a mechanical over-rev because valves, pushrods, and lifter were damaged. I raced with this damage and picked up 2mph in the quarter-mile after the repair. If I did a cam change, I wouldn't use the stock lifters.
