Unless your going to double your rms wattage don't bother with a larger amp.
By the way, Did your brother put polyfil in the sub box?
If not, put 1.5 lbs of polyfil per cubic foot of air space the enclosure supplies the subs.
This will help give a little better bass output.

those are dual voice coil subwoofers, first thing to make sure is are they wired correctly. To get 250W to each sub from your 500W amp each sub needs to be a dual 2 ohm voice coil wired in series to achieve 4 ohms, then the two subwoofers need to be wired in parallel to achieve a 2 ohm overall load. Ask your brother if he wired it like that and you will only need a bigger amp if you are unsatisfied with the loudness/quality of your system.

To get a +3db boost in output you either need to triple your power, double the amount of speakers, or if you are currently using a sealed box, a ported box cad yield similar results. 12W3v2 are rated @ 300watts RMS, same with 12W3v3 are rated @ 300watts RMS, and the original 12W3's are rated at 250watts RMS. You do not need a bigger amp. What gauge of power wire are you running? If your answer is 8awg then you should switch to 4awg.
