I'm getting ready to do my first cam install (using the write-up at ls1howto.com). A friend of a friend told me that I can't do it unless I know how to properly "set" the pushrods onto the lifters. I have never heard of this before. Can anybody shed some light on what this guy is talking about?

When your ready to start putting the rockers back in just take each push rod and push down on the lifter untill you feel the lifter hit the cam. Then torque down the rocker and move to the next one. One thing I will do is after all 16 rockers are in roll the engine over 2-3 time and re torque all the rockers. Also when torqueing the rockers put your finger on the push rod and roll the engine over untill that push rod is all the way down so your not compressing the valve spring when torqueing the rocker.

When installing a cam you should check your pushrod length too. The higher lift the cam the longer pushrods you will need because they grind them on a smaller base circle so the cam will fit though the block.

Also when torquing your rockers down to 22ftlb you should put a dab of red thread locker (Locktite) on each bolt to keep them from backing out.

Ok thanks... I figured that was what he was referring to but he had me questioning myself. While you're all here, any other tidbits of advice NOT included in that write-up that could help me out? Thanks!

Before I put the rocker covers on I will take and dump oil on the rockers, down the push rod holes, and basicly all over the valve train for the first start up. You can also unplug the main harness for the coils and turn the engine over with the starter, it will not fire but you can hear if anything sound wrong and watch the oil pressure gauge it will build oil pressure arter a few seconds of cranking. Plug them back in and fire the engine and let it get to full temp... At this point I will change the oil and filter. If your changing springs take it easy on the moter untill you get a few heat cycles on the engine and then give her hell.

Not sure if it mentions it but put red thread locker on your 3 cam bolts and your cam retainer bolts too.

Definetly loctite the rocker bolts. There was a guy in here who said one of his came loose and wrecked his brand new forged bottom end.

How would it wreck his bottom end? Just cursious. I would just think it would cause a missfire.

Personally I dont loctite the rocker bolts I just use some thread sealer on the intakes becuase my runners expose the bolt holes. Just make sure the bolts and threads in the nhead are nice and clean. Also I dont know how crazy you wanna go here but there is a torque procedure/sequence for the rockers.

From my understanding the whole rocker came off, broke some stuff, and sent debris through the engine.

Damn that sucks. So some say to use loctite on the rocker arms, some say don't. I think I'll just split the difference and use the blue loctite!

FWIW i didnt use any locktite on mine. I didnt havea torque wrench that went down to 22ft lb so i just cranked them down what i felt was tight and left them to put loctite on when i got my torque wrench. That was like 6 months ago and i just odered my lb in torque wrench 2 daysa go lol.
