With the way the economy is, I'm surprised that lots of people still have money for high performance mods. Seems like it would be a difficult time to start up a new shop or even for existing shops to stay afloat.

Where are you located and what are you planning on having done? Plenty of shops can do many mods and some basic tuning.
Finding an honest, knowledgeable, experienced and fully equipped shop becomes the real challenge. Do your homework and take a tour of the shops you are looking at before you spend your money. Caveat Emptor!
