Default second drive

anyone know whats the purpose of the second drive in that a4 I have a 99z I always wondered what the drive after the OD was for, like when would you use it. This guy at a tranmission shop told me to use that in stop and go and in the city driving it helps your mpg.

It disables 4TH gear and allows overun or engine braking when decel , For normal driving there would be little point in using it . However for instance coming down a mountain it can help to slow the car some and towing it would help support the input sprag by turning on the overun clutch.
I do not see how it would save gas even around town in fact I would think the oposite

1 is first gear/ 2 is second/ D is third/ OD is fourth. in a 4th gen the selector allows you the choice of any gear the trans has. You would use 3rd for the reasons already stated above. You would prolly manually select D as often as you would 2 or 1= not often
