There is a little more involved than just the mains, but I have seen a stock LT1 block handle upwards of 450rwhp, It depends on your set up, rpm range, power adder, etc. The real question is, how much power do you want to make?

I made 537/650 through and automatic with the stock 2 bolt main block. i have sense had mine splayed but i plan on making a few more. Like ss said, what are your plans, because having your block splayed and 4 bolt main caps installed is a rather large explense.

i've heard that 2 bolt blocks converted to 4 bolt blocks are actually stronger than the normal 4 bolt block. not sure if this is just a wives tale or not...

Its true.

Splayed 4 bolt is much stronger.
And in my opinion would not be worth doing any other way!

+1 splayed 2 bolt beats the hell outta a 4bolt. my buddy looked for a while for a decent priced 4 bolt but since they were all "vette" blocks everyone wanted stupid amounts of money so he just poneyed up the difference and had a 2 bolt block splayed....

My 383 is going to be Callies 4-bolt splayed. Probably don't need it, but i am still up in the air whether i am going to supercharge it in the future, so better to build it right the first time. then again, prob gonna have to pull the motor to change the compression for supercharger anyway. I beat the living **** out of my cars so i am gonna go all out and hope it holds up.

A factory four bolt main block is stronger than a factory two bolt block. Corvettes came with four bolt main blocks. There have been reports that some F-body cars had four bolt main blocks towards the end of production, probably because they had more Corvette engines made than they needed.

A block with splayed four bolt mains is stronger than a factory four bolt main block. You can only have a splayed main block by tacking a two bolt block and having a machine shop do the conversion.

Other than these differences, the blocks are identical.

The strongest blocks are two bolt blocks that are converted to four bolt splayed mains with steel caps and studs.

theres the explanation i was trying to come up with. I remember with my old drag third gen, was building a 377 sbc and came across that discussion with my engine builder, ended up converting it to a 4 bolt main.

I know on a big block, two bolt blocks are good to 500 HP with bolts, 600 when studded.

^A 2 bolt big block will take a lot more than that. There's a lot of people running ~700hp on 2 bolt mains with stock bolts.

Should be stated that is only one LT block the LT4 and the 4 bolt LT1 blocks are all the same casting as the 2 bolt.
