Is it common for a 98 trans am to not want to idle.

could be a vacuum leak or idle air control valve. just a couple possibilities that come to mind

Yes, thats how GM put them out.

J/k are there any other symptoms? Does it start but die? When exactly does it die? Any check engine lights on if/when it does run?

sounds like a vacume leak or really really really dirty air filter or a lot of different things what are the other symptoms? Does it have a big cam but no tune?

Did the battery recently die? did you have to jump it?

Well it's generally accepted that the 98's don't idle very well.

Not...Like other posters have mentioned, check the IAC and all of your 'vac lines...

the car will start and die right after you start it if you dont give it a little gas also after you get it to idle, if you hold the gas down for a second and then let off it will die. the batt. and alt. are good they have been tested we are going to try and replace the fuel pump. also we have replaced the fuel filter and air filter, the car has a small cam i am not sure on the size. any help would be great thanks.

Why replace the fuel pump? Check the pressure first, if its ok don't bother.

IAC valve causes that kind of thing too. Might not throw a code/SES light either.
