Default Converter Install Question

Do most of you remove your y pipe when you drop the trans? Do you think it's possible to leave it in place for the install? We had the y pipe welded to the collectors to stop the leaks, so i'm just wondering if it will be possible to do this install without cutting.

Thanks
-Steve

The trans should be able to fall through the Y-pipe without any issues. I think the problem would be reaching all the bolts with the pipe in the way. Plenty of space to work with it removed.

Its for a 2000 T/A btw. I've got over 3 ft worth of extensions so i think i should be able to find some type of passage to get to them with.

In my personal experience it was just much easier to remove the y-pipe. I've never tried it with the y-pipe in place, I always get my headers flanged, so I can remove them. Give it a shot and let us know how it goes!

I think they are Jet hot headers/y pipe or hookers. Of course the y pipe has been modified some. I got tired of all the leaks so i had the collectors welded. Guess we will just have to try it with it in place. Converter install won't be for another month or so just trying to plan everything out and get the parts we need. Thanks for the help.

You can definitely leave the y pipe on but have to disconnect the exhaust near the rear axle to let things swing down enough. I have left the y pipe on for my last 4 trans swaps.

Like others said, you can do it with it in. I personally wouldn't want to try it. I had a hard enough time reaching my trans bolts with the exhaust off the car.
