Default Which 10 bolt does a 2001 WS6 have?

i've read in this article that there's 2 10-bolts it said there's 8.2 inch and a 8.5 inch it says the 8.5 came from 1971-1996 on gm vehicles is there a chance a 01 would have one, i know it said 71-96 but can someone confirm
thanks

nice even weaker than the 8.2

i need to fix my posi in my 10 bolt since i can't afford new rear right now i was thinking about putting some axles in it and welding the axle tubes but since its 7.5 i'll just weld the axle tubes, rebuilt the posi and drive it till it breaks while saving for a midwest 9"
thanks

You won't regret saving for the Midwest Fab 9" ....bad piece!! The 10 bolt is the weak link in the F-body's especially when you mod it and hook it....one bad thing GM did with these cars. Good luck on fix and in an upgrade.

if you have a 01 it shouldnt have clutches in it. as its a torsen style. and the 98-99 cars they dont even make replacement clutches for that i have seen.

$450 for a load of bs vs $2600 for a rear that works. Often times the one you can't afford is money well spent. Meaning $0 spent vs $450 for nothing.

Even if your rear had clutches, they're typically $80 a set with springs and it's a one hour job at most.

Come to think of it they use the Eaton Locking Differential (AKA Gov-Loc) in all trucks that have the 7.5/7.625
Maybe someone swapped one of those time bombs into your car (or plans to)
You think F Body 7.5's are weak, put a gov loc in it.

i live in canada so the clutches are $190 everything is more here, even if i have to buy a new posi its better than one wheel peel through the whole summer

the midwest 9" is $3500 for the options i need which equals to me
$3500 x 1.25(exchange)+ tax(13% on the border)= $4943.75 CAN + Labour

so there's a choice
- $450 patch job if its clutches
- $700 roughly to put a new posi
- $5000 for the midwest( but there's no money for that)
- $0 drive with no posi(which sucks)

and you're right spending any money on the 10 bolt is useless but its either fix the posi and take a chance or drive with no posi since there's no way i can spend 5k this year on it
thanks matt

Changing clutches is an easy job you may be able to do yourself if you like working on cars.

It's still kind of odd because none of these cars came with clutch type differentials from the factory.
Unless your mechanic took the cover off to check.

The factory Auburns use cone gears, and the Torsens use helical gears (which don't typically wear out)
Thats why I said the only clutch type posi they put in a 7.5 was the gov loc, and you don't want that in your car. A previous owner may have put one in, doubtful, but thats the only thing that would be rebuildable.

i went through 3 10 bolts...they are all junk..i even went with forged, axles, arp studs, auburn posi, and motive gears 3:73's, and a girdle, welded the axle tubes..it still blew up on me...so i spent $2600 on a moser 12 bolt and dont worry about it now..

Default 98-02 LSD's

I have done plenty of researching on the factory 98-02 F body rears being that my 01 WS6 broke 3 of the 4 bolts(1 bolt would back out and snap on the housing, 3 seperate times) that hold the worm gears (LSD unit) on my torsen T2. The GM dealer here couldnt find anything, it kept showing an auburn unit for 98-00 z28/ss,t/a like most every part I've needed they all stop at 2000. I finally started just ordering 01-02 Z06 parts since almost all the drivetrain parts were same as Z06 part#s except for transmission, rearend. Anyway I ended up at a LSx speed shop and they recognized my LSD unit and gave me a # to StreetLegalPerformance. I called and SLP told me that most 98-00 F bodys got auburns, and some also had original torsen, until 01-02 they had it as an option on WS6/SS/Fhawk to opt for torsen T2 for a better road racing unit, auburn more for drag racing and that nowhere on the part or door codes will it say SLP because it was a factory equiped part made by SLP. Thats just from my experiences, I talked to atleast 10 shops in STL area b4 that and they all were reputable shops and none said they ever seen a full mechanical locked unit like that in an F body.....

well my 10 bolt is holding up like a champ. hooks hard enough to yank my driver side wheel up a lil bit.
