Default What is the sensor on the oil pan oil block-off plate?

I have a Corvette oil pan and it has a sensor on the oil cooler oil block off plate. I think this is the same place you would hook up your factory oil cooler lines. What is that sensor for? I know the oil pressure sender is on top of the engine, so it's probably not that.

Is it oil temp?

Is it necessary to have?

I beleive it is oil temp. F-Bodies do not have it, so is it necessary, no.
