Default Won't hold a charge. DIes when driving.

Just one problem after the other, here is the next. Suddenly one night when I was driving, the car decided to slowly loose all electrical power, and then die. Now it will only run, relavent to the length of time that you jump it. I took the alternator off, and it tested fine. The battery is also brand new. What to now?

Its either your alternator or a bad connection somewhere between your alternator and battery. But I'm willing to say 99% that the alternator is toast. What is your voltage at idle with car running? No jumper cables hooked up.

I had it tested, and It tested fine. When at idel, after I have jumped it (won't start unless jumped) It runs 13.5V. It will ever so slowly get less, and less untill it has nothing, and dies. Of course it happens 50x faster if i have the radio on, lights, ect...

It is an 01. I've heard people having a problem with the body control module? The search has been down, and I can't find anything on it.

Also got the code 1860, but it didnt show a def.

What do you mean it will stay running after you pull the alternator? Thats my problem, it won't stay running.

I'm so pissed off at this car. I'm selling it and buying a mustang.

Its the alternator, it should be at 13.5-13.7 even with a load on it.

I understand that, That is what the scanner said. Should I take the Alt off, and just get a new one even though it tested good?

get a new alt! if you are getting less and less voltage when you have accesories on then its causing your already pooped out alternator to work over time when it cant charge as it is, so it just drains your battery.did you test it with all the accesories on and see what happens..id say just get a new one any ways.

ps..there are 3 legs to a alternator the first illustration shows what a good lalternator should be operating you need a BEAR or special tool like a genyis or vantage tool to see this but ...a bad alternator will look like the second line.. each leg last for 3 waves or crests..and should be some what uniform throughout like the top illustration sorry about the use of microsoft paint lol hope this helps and again the lower illustrationis a bad alternator which yours prolly looks like..

LOL I love it! I'll just pick up a new one, seems like everyone agrees. I'll let you guys know how it goes. Any chance I could get a direct replacement off of a truck, or something that will produce more power? (I have a system and such)

Have you checked the exciter wire(small wire runs from the alternator to the PCM) I had the same issue and it was the connector that was bad.

Doesn't mean anything that they said the alternator is good, there's more to it than just the alternator.

Jump start the engine....pull the positive terminal off the battery......if the engine keeps running the alternator IS GOOD. If it stalls immediately the alternator IS BAD.

Or the alternator IS GOOD but the excitor wire (it plugs into the back/top of the alternator, little tiny ****** too) broke off or that connection needs to be checked out.

Well that wire, It had been cut before, because I found one of the clamps on it holding two wires together. I pulled it apart, and redid it just to be safe. Maybe I just didnt do a good job on it?

That wire is a little PITA...seems to cause everyone some heartache at some point. It's so delicate that it breaks easily. I would recheck it.

Also, check all the ground wires, they can break too! No ground...no circuit...no charge.
