Default Max Rev Limiter on TR230 Cam

Hi I will have the cam installed soon the TR230/224 111 LSA thunder cam, with the reccomended Crane Dual springs and the whole nine yards. What do you guys running this cam currently have your rev limiter set to? 6300 6500 or more? And is it "safe" to set rev limiter that high with chromoly pushrods and stock heads with that cam?

Thank you

Default Re: Max Rev Limiter on TR230 Cam

I had my limiter set at 7000 rpms with stock heads and 7200 rpms with a set of GTPs. However, a 6800 revlimiter and a 6600 shiftpoint will do just fine.

Jason talked to you on the phone today about the cam install and the clutch. Gotta tell you guys I have bought a lot form you guys and your service still amazes me. I am so far one VERY satisfyied customer. Cant wait to catch that Z06 that gave me a whooping a day ago he was a stock 04 Z06 ;-) Kinda unfair after the cam install but lol the way I see it he has a heads and cam advantage over me (even though its small heads and cam lol)... Thanks again.. Will post Dyno #'s next week.

I have my limiter set at 6500 and I shift at 6300 but I'm a wuss! Haven't gotten it all tuned in yet either. It was set to 6800 limit and shift at 6500, don't think that's too high? TR230/224 and an A4.

You are leaveing a lot of power on the table. That cam really needs to be shifted about 6600-6800.

I've got the rev limiter set at 6900, and the shift light set at 6600. That TR 230/224 loves to rev.

Well, as I said before... The car has yet to be fully tuned and I wasn't sure about spinning it that high. I'd rather give up a little power for some longevity.

I got your cam kit "LS1CAMPKG1" with the 918 springs, TR pushrods and the titanium retainers. Think it's really safe to spin to 6800-7000 while shifting at 6600 with a basically stock 4L60E?

I know my setup isn't matched well since I got my converter (Yank TT2800/3.0) and headers (MAC mids with ORY) before the cam. I'm also still running the 2.73 gears in the stock 10 bolt. That's mainly why I'm not too worried about squeezing every last drop of power out of it until I get a rear end and a better converter. Recommendations?

That's your option and the motor will live longer at lower rpms.

The valve train will have no problems turning 7K but the stock bottem end will only take 6800+ for so long. The stock rod bolts are the main problem.

I know my setup isn't matched well since I got my converter (Yank TT2800/3.0) and headers (MAC mids with ORY) before the cam. I'm also still running the 2.73 gears in the stock 10 bolt. Definitely the TT2800 and the 2.73 gears have to go but believe it or not a stock 10-bolt will hold up pretty good in an auto car. My car went low 1.4x 60's for quite a while without breaking before I upgraded to a 9". Mac headers are not that bad so before spending money on long tubes I would put it into a better converter and more gear.

shift light set at 6800rpms and my redline is 7000rpms. I have the better 2001+ rod bolts so I feel a little safer turning higher R's

Any converter recommendations? I've been thinking 4000-4400 stall with a 2.0-2.5 STR. Hmm, Maybe I'll try those ET Streets after all. I know the 10 bolts are weak and many say they last just fine in A4 cars, but I'd rather not blow out my rear and have to pay a few hundred mile tow home from a track!!!

If a race converter is what you are looking for I would consider the TCI 4400 or if you budget can be stretched a little then a Yank PT4000 or PT4400. They'll make the car fly.

The entire top end of my motor is from Thunder Racing. TR 230/224-111 cam, 5.3 S2 heads + springs, TR pushrods, etc etc. My short block was built by Futral with ARP bolts, Diamond pistons & all the goodies etc..

I have my rev limited set to 7200 and my shift light at 6800, on the dyno I made power all the way past 7000 rpm.

Here:

404 RWHP
445 RWTQ

This is with a TH400, 1300 HP steel drive shaft & Moser 12 bol 3.73 gears

This was the first tuning I did with the motor, I was running 28* timing on 93 octane pump gas. I am now running 34* timing on 104 octane when racing at the track. I am going to get on the dyno again maybe next week to program a LS1 PCM file for different senarios. I will let you know what I dyno with the track setup.

I can't say enough good things about Thunder Racing and their products!

What springs are you guys using? I have the TR230/224 with 987`s and it seems like i get valve float around 6200 . Its up and down till about 6700. I think it might be time for some 977`s . Im switching to the TR236/230 this weekend . Any ideas? BTW I have my revlimter set at 6800 and my shift point is set at 6600.

I want an aggressive converter. I'm not overly concerned with streetability since I rarely drive the car. As you can tell by my conservativeness that NO, it's not a full on race car.

I run 918 springs.

Okay if you want to be conservative go with PT4000. You wont regret it.
