Default T-top Rattles, Anyone?

My T-tops have rattled off and on since I bought the car several years ago. I took the car to the dealership a couple of times when it was under warranty but they never fixed the problem. A lot of folks just say deal with it, nothing can be done but that rattling right by one's head can get quite annoying! Athough subframe connectors may have helped a little, I recently tried something different with them that I should have done years ago and they have been silent so far.

Step one: Take off t-top

Step two: Take out two phillips head screws that hold on each of the plastic covers on the car on either end of the t-top

Step 3: After removing the rear plastic cover and pulling down the front plastic cover you will see two metal tabs on either end that the metal rod from the t-top slides into. Carefully pull down these metal tabs about 1/8 inch or so to make the t-top fit tighter. I also tightened up the two screws on the bottom of the tabs that hold the tabs in place.

Step 4: Test fit the t-top. It should fit more snug and be more solid, because it fits more snug, when replacing a t-top you probably need to gently push down on the t-top with one hand while flipping the handle closed with the other.

Yeah, it's pretty simple but I just wanted to share because it has worked so far (about a week and a half of driving and not the first rattle when it normally did it every trip) and also I have been to a car wash and did NOT have any drips inside the car like normal from t-top leaks.

I know the t-top rattles (and leaks) are very common to these cars and I have not seen anything on a fix besides using silicone or stuffing in a piece of cloth so I hope this helps out and is a permanant fix!

Sure thing, let us know how it works on yours! I drove the TA again today and still no noise from the t-tops....

It's fairly simple but I added some pics for clarification.

I've put several hundred miles on the car and went to a carwash again and I have to say the t-tops did leak some this time with the high water pressure. But still no rattles though!

Keeping those things adjusted correctly will also prevent your t t-tops from flying off while you are driving, which has happened to many people.

My passenger t-top squeaks come from the plastic you removed.

Awesome right up, I have sfc and they helped a little, but they still rattled, Im gonna give this a try. Another thing I found that rattles is the unit that holds the seat belt behind my head.

I just put SFCs on my car, I'm hoping the rattles will be gone. If not, I will try this.

Just to give this thread a bump.

I found this T-top fix and had never seen this method before. I kept taking apart the top and lubricating the hinges inside the plastic cover with no success anymore. Tried this and no more rattles.

My M6 car is plagued with this issue, and I have tried this technique with no success. The best luck I've had is by spraying lubricant into the holes for the t-top prongs, but that only lasts for a while and then the creaking comes back. Bolt-on SFC's were no help either.

Funny thing, this is the only f-body in our family that has had this problem (out of five t-top cars).

Yeah the lubricant stopped working for me. The hinges are just too tight to get in there real good. Fortunately this has worked great so far, it's nice an quiet again.

I did notice there are plastic inserts in the holes that could get worn down over time too.
