curious - what could be the reason oil would be getting into the intake?

curious - what could be the reason oil would be getting into the intake? when i took apart my motor there was some oil collected in there.sorry don't mean ask a dumb question. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" />
