Manual Transmission - Test drive, Monster Clutch, tick master

I recently installed a Monster stage 3 with a Chrome Moly flywheel, and new slave. Also installed a Tick master cylinder. Today, for the break in, I drove all over the place and have nothing but great things to say for both of them. The clutch chattered for about 40 miles and then stopped. It engages very smooth. Also, I weighed everything from my previous clutch, a ram Powergrip HD with billet flywheel, and the monster. The Ram flywheel is 27 lbs, and the Monster is 15. The ram PP is 20 lbs, and the monster is 25. both disc's were 5-6 lbs. So the lightweight monster is only about 7 lbs lighter then the ram, but there is a noticeable difference in revving. However, it was no problem starting at a hill, or from a stop, and the revs dont drop like I have heard from aluminum flywheels on other clutches, maybe because the PP is heavier, and the Monster flywheel has the same material throughout, just thinner/drilled. But it really wasnt/isnt a problem at all, we will see how it works at the track, under 6500 rpm launches.

Likewise the Tick master really woke the hydraulics of this car up, the pedal only travels maybe 1.5-2 inches, but it is very predictable, and allows a much much faster engagement, so much so, that I realized my timing was off between feet slightly due to the pitiful stock style master, which was only about 1 year old... I will be putting on another 200 miles tomorrow, and then plan to get the car tuned, and hopefully take it to the track within 2 weeks.

Both Monster (SNL) and Tick, get two thumbs up from me.

Good to hear you've had nothing but good things to say about this combo.. I was at the track today and noticed that my ls7 clutch just doesn't cut it anymore... so A friend told me about Monster clutches and Tick master so I'm looking at that same combo with the Level 3.

Does the master cylinder rod only move 1.5-2 inches? Or the actual pedal pad? Just out of curiousity. I know you loose some pedal throw with the Tick...

You lose a little throw with the Tick, but I can assure you it isn't that much. Mine is set very close to stock throw...

Cool deal. I have all most the exact same setup but chromoly with the level 2. I think I still prefer the heavier flywheel, but its not a big difference. Keep us updated how it does at the track. Interested to see how that goes, with the flywheel.

well its got 30k on it and almost 500 at the motor... its basically like a stock ls1 clutch with a stock ls1..

the ls7 was good when i just had LTs but now with heads cam and everything else, when i go to launch at even 4k it just slips...


and yes ls7's dont release all the way... it sucks

Going to the track very soon, so I will post up... Clutch holds like a mofo, im over the 500 mark now, dyno'd it today, and did some street pulls, HOLY SHIT, between the clutch and speed density tune, it pulls hard from a slow roll.

When you say 2 inches I would not think you are talking about the m.c. pushrod itself...

The actual pedal where you put your foot only moves 2 inches? Seriously?

Our master cylinder has slightly more than 1" of stroke at the cylinder. Typically, the pedal sits a little lower than the factory pedal height (maybe an inch lower) once everything is adjusted properly. There should deffinately be more pedal movement that 2" from top to bottom.

Thats what I was thinking when I asked the question. Just the geometry of the pedal means that even if you only had 3/4" of pushrod travel that the pedal itself would move more than 2"... If my pedal only went down 2", I would feel like it was broken.

Sitting below the stock location by an 1", but still traveling to the floor is ok...thats about what I'de expect from a bigger bore MC.

So I had a Monster Clutch and it chattered so I went and got a Diamond Clutch instead. The Diamond Clutch was a way better price and I've had it about a year now and been REAL hard on it and it still works as if brand new. Sry but I personally prefer the Diamond over Monster any day.........Great customer service At both SNL and TDP. :read: lolol
