Catalytic converter can also rattle if the ceramic inside breaks. Smack with a rubber hammer and see if the insides sound loose.

I agree. I've had 2 3800 V-6's. My opinion is that your CAT is going out. Sounds like some gravel rattling around under the car somewhere. Well the stuff in the CAT is clumping up and you are probably a month or so away from getting a SES light and code.

When my CAT went out the rattle sounded like it was coming from under the passenger side floor board. If your rattle is coming further back you''ll just need to narrow it down and try to identify it.

Mine used to rattle also, get a big stick or pipe and prod around different areas until the rattle stops. It turned out the clamp where the Y-pipe met the I-pipe was the culpurt(sp) on mine. It was extremely annoying but it would only do it when I was in drive at stop, I used just put it in Neutral to make it go away. Then one day I stopped being lazy and found out what it was and fixed it.

A not so common problem I've seen before is the over-axle pipe rattling on the cross member. Give that a look too maybe, they should not be touching.

I feel your pain. Mine rattles too. My tailpipe was hitting a little bit but I used a long metal rod and bent it a little. Now it is rattling again!! The best thing to do is get under there while it's running and see where the noise is coming from.
