Default 847, stall is def. needed?

With the GM847 is a stall absolutely needed? My friend is looking at this cam, but I'm trying to figure out what all he would need. He has a stock stall right now but he thinks he has 3.73 gears though.

Also what valve springs will work? Like I said just trying to figure out what all he would need.

Would smaller cams like the 227 and hot cam need a higher stall?

Yes! You would want to change the stall for any cam...yet alone a big cam like a GM847. I think with a stock stall the car would feel very sluggish. I would look into a set of PAC 1518 springs for that cam.

i don't think it will idle in gear without a stall......
3500-4200 would be a nice complimenting converter

The car probably wouldn't even operate without a stall. It would be almost undrivable because of how sluggish it would be.

Thanks guys, I've talked it over with him, probably going to be sticking with a stock cam for now. What about the smaller cams like the hotcam? Will it have the same issue?

Also he needs longtubes and a ORY, so if anyone has these items laying around let me know.

Your buddy definitely should not be making his cam selections by the suporting mods required. That's backwards. Ask him how much power he wants to make, or how fast he wants to E.T., and then more importantly, what's his budget and go from there.

to be honest, a STOCK cammed Lt1 benefits from a stall 26-2800 optimum would be more especially with a larger cam. with all the posts about this it should never be an issue......

tell your friend to forget a cam if he does not have all the bolt ons yet

I don't think he has a power goal in mind, I think its more sound related in his case. He said he could get a 847 for $150, I then told him let me figure out what else you are going to need. Specifically what springs and a converter, I've been around long enough to figure the rest of the equation out.
Budget is a issue in his case though so I think for now no aftermarket cam will be the best route. Def. doesn't have funds for a converter.

Thanks, I think I've got him sticking to a stock cam for now, we are just going to try to take care of that knocking shortblock and get him some longtubes.
This is the black Formula I posted video of about a week or so back.

Yeah, just do all the bolt-ons first. But a knocking motor? Better get that taken care of.

Yeah he is lining up another short block at the moment and looking for longtubes and a ORY.

Whats funny on the knocking motor is it has been knocking for a long time now. I'm just hoping it holds together long enough that I get my car back off jackstands so I have somewhere to work on his.

Well if you are installing a new shortblock, there is no better time then now to install a cam.

Yeah, but it just won't be in his budget for a converter, springs, depending on if the shortblock came with kinda fresh lifters, his have 167k on them, well it would be outside his budget. I understand it would be a ton easier with the motor out of the car, but I guess he will just have to be patient.

a stock stalled 847 cammed car would make little sense... a smaller cam would out perform it easily.

I've seen decent size cam guys on a stock convertor, not exactly a beast from a dig but it's doable i guess

The 847 needs o rev too high for the stock shortblock anyway.

Far as stall, I did a ZZ4 cam which is like 24 degrees smaller on the intake than the 847 and still I saw no gain till I properly supported it, got .7 or so from a 2800 stall on STREET TIRES. In other words a cam without a stall does not work well. My car drove wonderfully, guys who knew about the cam swore it passed for stock in sound and manners.
It ran a best of 14.9 cam only(sad I know), then as I gave it slicks, stall and headers it dropped to 13.2 without ever taking off the valve covers again. That is how important it is to have supporting mods for a cam.

actually 847 runs out of steam before most smaller cams and doesn't rev high since the heads can't support it

avg gm847 dynograph I've seen peaks around 5800-5900rpm, whereas my cc503 was still making power at 6400rpm

That's EXACTLY what I meant! Your post doesn't seem accurate.
