Default replaced optispark dist and now car overheats

just replaced the optispark and now the car quicky overheats. When putting the water pump on I was thinking about that gear that slides in but assumed it was correct because the pump went flush to the engine.

Questions:Could the gear possibly not be splined in and just spinning?
Could air be in the cooling system and how do you get it out?

thanks LEE

See if you have air in the system first. Open the bleeder screws after the thermostat opens. http://shbox.com/1/bleeders.jpg
