Default Main drive belt slipping off

Alright guys, I spent the day out at the track Sunday and was running the car pretty hard on the nitrous. after I got home, I was under the hood and happened to notice that my main drive belt had slipped over the pullys slightly and actually tore off one complete rib of the belt, it was all coiled up on the passenger side of the engine bay. During the track day before this, my buddies and I were talking to another trans am driver with his hood up and noticed his was doing the same thing. It only took a wrench to slacken the tensioner and put the belt back where it belongs, but whats causing this? A weak belt tensioner? Or maybe its the fact that GM didnt put a groove on the water pump pully to help hold the belt on(one of the most demanding consumers on an accessory drive system) Any suggestions?

Well, the water pump pulley runs on the back of the belt, so that's why no grooves. You should get a new tensioner and/or get a high ribbed idler pulley that some sponsors sell.

Your problem is the tensioner, they aren't good for smacking the throttle with high HP set-ups. They bounce violently. When I got my 427ci installed I threw the serpentine belt every single time I smacked the throttle.

You need the Katech tensioner. There is no spring, its fixed and does not move at all. You will never throw a belt again.

I have ran into this as well when on the road coarse. There was another thread that meantioned a different (LS2?) pulley that would hold the belt better. I gotta look into that.

For those who don't want to spend the money on the Katech tensioner, you can buy the Larry Pulley. It has a wall about 1/2" high so the belt cannot move forward when the throttle is hit hard and fast and the belt tensioner spring starts to bounce.

You know, this was back in 2002 when my engine was built. I saw these Larry Pulleys on the net, but I went with the Kateck so I was eliminate any bouncing or vibration of the tensioner too.

Maybe start a thread in the External Engine section....someone may have one for sale or tell you where they sell them.
